On June 30th, 2017, the world lost an extraordinary man at the age of 66. Roger Allen Herzog was born on April 15, 1951 to Leona Mae Wildman and Ben T. Herzog in Miles City, MT and grew up on a ranch in Knowlton, MT. He was the middle child of three. He joined his older sister, Patsy and later to come was his younger brother, Monte. He loved to hunt and fish growing up and was put to work on a tractor at a very young age.
Roger worked for his uncle, Paul Herzog, during high school and shortly after on the original Herzog homestead. He continued on a tractor for many more years to come after marrying Linda L. Smith in 1971. They started a family and continued farming. To this union four children were born: Jody, Jenny, Randy & Ryan. They later divorced. Roger enjoyed the Yellowstone Valley and would make that his home for the rest of his life.
Roger was hired at the Post Office in the mid 90’s and worked there for 16 years. After his retirement with the Post Office, he decided he would still need to keep busy so he went to work at B&C Oil, now known as City Service Valcon. He enjoyed getting in the gas truck to see the countryside, visiting many farmers and ranchers along the way. Roger enjoyed traveling, making trips to Germany, Jamaica, Croatia and Cancun. In his younger years, Roger was an avid hunter and really enjoyed his elk hunts each fall to White Sulphur Springs with family.
He also enjoyed his fishing/camping excursions with friends, Greg Adrian and Danny Kaylor, only known to his family as “Adrian” and “Kaylor.”
With his recent retirement this year, Roger enjoyed his new found free time with several more camping adventures, Billings trips, Harley rides, drinking a cold beer on a hot day, and his favorite pastime- shooting the bull with anyone he could.
Roger was preceded in death by his mother, Leona Mae Herzog; paternal grandparents, John and Elsa Herzog; maternal grandparents, Elmer and Rachel Wildman.
Roger is survived by his father, Ben T. Herzog, sister Patsy (Mike) Davis, brother Monte (Pat) Herzog, children Jody (David) Fiechtner, Jenny (Chris) Ketchum, Randy (Ashley) Herzog, Ryan Herzog and grandchildren, Carson and Reid Fiechtner, Blake and Lucas Herzog, Brianna and Ashtyn Ketchum. Roger is also survived by several special nieces and nephews: Marla, Dusty, Tammy, Jenny, Kaci Jo, Joe and his extended family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Knowlton Cemetery or to a charity of one’s choice.

To All of Roger’s Family;
I am so incredibly sad to hear of Roger’s passing. I have known Roger since I was a child and have been fortunate enough to be his neighbor for the past six years. He was a great neighbor, so patient in teaching this dry land farmer the ins and outs of irrigation. He always smiled and laughed, even when things didn’t quite go as planned. I appreciated his friendship immensely and he will be greatly missed. My heart hurts for all of you as he was such an incredible man! My sympathy to all.

Words cannot express the sympathy I feel for Roger’s family. I have many memories of babysitting Jodi & Jenny for years and later the boys. At first Roger would come get me and deliver me home every Friday night while they bowled. Then I got a driver’s license and continued the fun through high school. Roger always had a great smile and a friendly word. His was one of the very few ( only about 3) people who addressed me by my full given name and it always sounded unique to me. God Bless and Rest in Peace

Roger was a amazing man. He was amazing neighbor. I remember when I was little my sister and I did a lemonade stand. And he would always tip us each $5. He will be truly missed especially his smile.
Janet and Harley Klein says
Roger was such a gentle person and had that wonderful smile on his face all the time!! Harley and I were very shocked by this unfortunate news of his passing. We got to know Roger through his working with Harley at the Post Office and considered him a good friend. Life seems to shorten with every day we are on earth, and God must have needed another angel so he chose one of the best. Roger, keep the hay green, show them where the mail needs to go and keep that smile on your face until we meet again~~

Dear Ben, Patsy, Monte and the Herzog family,
I too follow a long line of old family friends of Roger’s, and wish to send my sad regard to you of his passing! I also want to express to you,- Ben, Patsy and Monte, the respect I have held all these years for Roger and all of you. The sincere kindness and friendliness you all have shown me whenever we met or spoke has never been forgotten. This leads me to the memories I have of Roger. One such memory stands out to me, which defines his character and yours too Monte! I hope you can recall this. It was many years ago on a hot afternoon at a place called “Butler Hill,” located off the highway going north from White Sulfur Springs to Great Falls, but nearer to White Sulfur. It was hunting season and Randy and I were building wood corrals on the flat near the entrance gate inside the property to the mountain called “Butler Hill.” Monte, you and Roger were up hunting on the hill. I was digging a large corner post hole for the corral with a bar and post hole digger and making very slow progress, in the rock and dry clay ground. I heard the truck and when I looked up, here come you and Roger. You both came with water and compassion and the offer to help!!! It wasn’t long and that 4ft deep hole was done dug!! 🙂 I was extremely thankful and have never forgotten both of your kindness!! This is who Roger was That big smile and kind heart. That’s how I will always remember him!! Patsy, what a good friend you have been through the years! Never forgetting and always greeting with a smile and a friendly hello! And my friend Ben!!! Remember up at Harley’s at “Round Grvove”you helped me when I got my first elk? The Spike!!! I hope these memories I share here with you help to lift your hearts if only for a moment and bring a smile to your sadness. As I close this message of remembrance in honor of Roger I leave with a sad heart, but I leave feeling glad I knew him and will smile and see him as he was in life. Old friends must know we remember!!! May the Lord bless your family!
Sincerely
Curt Myran and the Myran family
Mike Archdale says
To Roger’s Family, at this moment words do not express my emotions. Roger and my friendship was created before we were born. My Dad, Jimmy Archdale and the Wildman family fore ordained our friendship. The first I went hunting for deer was north Elmer’s house. We went back to the house for lunch. That generation of Knowltonits was a special group. I remember after Harley’s passing. Dad had few words with me about Harley. It was latter I mentioned Roger to Dad. All the more Dad said me was “I had a good visit with Roger.” I see Roger later. Roger said to me ” your Dad and I had a good long of Hartley and the Wildman family.” Hope this makes sense. Alot emtions for me thinking of the Wildman Family and Jimmy Archdale.
