In Memory Of

Roland Rumph, age 100, of Biddle

April 24, 1916 – August 5, 2016

Roland Rumph passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, at the Powder River Manor in Broadus, MT on Friday, August 5, 2016. He was 100 years old.

Roland was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota on April 24, 1916. He was the eldest of seven children born to Clark Levi Rumph and Gertrude Anna (Schaap) Rumph. He grew up on the family homestead 20 miles south of Broadus on Butte Creek. He attended grade school at a country school on Butte Creek and graduated from high school in Broadus in 1934.

After high school he spent two years with the Civil Conservation Corps before returning to the family ranch on Butte Creek.

In 1945 he married Erma Weischedel. They ranched at his parent’s homestead on Butte Creek. In 1949 they purchased a small piece of land and the general store at Biddle, MT where they raised their family. He became postmaster at the Biddle Post Office. They spent the next 60+ years raising children, ranching, running the store and post office. His love of music and dancing was an integral part of his life. He was once asked what his hobby was, he replied “people”!

Roland is survived by his nine children, Delmar (Jan) of Morrison, CO, Dick (Holly) of Biddle, Donna (Kenny) Dague of Windsor, CO, Kermit (Valerie) of Biddle, Nathan (Connie) of Biddle, Quentin of Biddle, Jim (Sophia) of Tucson, AZ, Tom (Kitty) Riggs of Broadus, and Owen (Mary) of Biddle, twenty-six grandchildren, and thirty-seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Vern Barthuly of Billings, MT and Virginia Robinson of Broadus and one brother Roger Rumph of Napa, California.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 19, 2016 at 6:00 pm at the Biddle Community Heritage Center with supper following. Memorials can be made in memory of Roland Rumph to the Biddle Community Heritage Center, Biddle, MT 59314.

Memories of Rollie at the Vet Clinic are fond ones. He was always a gentleman with a sense of humor I really enjoyed. He could tell stories of the “good old days” that were interesting and funny. He was a good friend and will be missed by many. You have taken good care of him.

My memories of Rollie are from days gone by when we would be at Biddle visiting Grandpa and Grandma Richards and walk to the store with our nickels and dimes. He always talked to us…made us feel special, not the nuisance we probably were. May you find comfort in the love you have all shared through the years and you wonderful memories. Rollie did a lot of good for a lot of people.

Thinking of Rollie and also Erma with much love and admiration. Such great people and raised a truly great American family. They were full of wonderful memories of what it took to make it in this land of opportunity and shared those memories with my father as our family ” merged”. Thank you, and our love and sympathy to the Rumph Family. We’ll miss you, dear Rollie.

He will never REALLY be gone, will he? His wonderful family will have hundreds of stories and memories of him which will be repeated for as long as they live and there are all those photos, too. Wish we had been able to visit him more than the few times we were able to travel to Biddle but we are all proud to have known him …and all the great people in Biddle.

All our love and prayers to the family. Roly may be gone from this earth but he will never be forgotten, for he lives on in each one of his children who have passed it on to their children and them to theirs. His body is gone but each of you carry his love and passion for life and people. What more of a testimony could anyone ever have. May God hold you tight as you walk through this difficult time.

Rollie welcomed this school teacher into his home, cooked her breakfast, put her on a good horse and treated her like a daughter. His kindness and the open arms of the Rumph family is greatly appreciated. He will be missed. May the family memories bring joy and reflection during this time. He touched many hearts.
