Rose Grenz, age 83, of Miles City passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2004 at the Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City.

Rose was born in Gorham, North Dakota on February 3, 1921, the daughter of Russian immigrants, Steve and Katherine (Godlesky) Anheluk. As a young girl, Rose was a Shepard, with dreams of one day being able to drive an automobile which they would occasionally see passing through. The family would travel to town once a year by horse and buggy, the daughters receiving only a nickel apiece to spend. She attended elementary schools in Gorham, moving to Medora for high school. She boarded with a shopkeepers family, and worked for them while attending school. Rose graduated high school in Medora as the valedictorian of her class, which consisted of two students. She then went to Beauty School in Fargo and opened a beauty shop in Bowman, North Dakota followed by one in Belfield. While in Belfield, she met Chris Grenz in 1945 and married. In 1946, Chris and Rose moved to Miles City and purchased the 600 Bar. Rose convinced Chris to start a five-stool restaurant and bakery across from the bar. As the dining area continued to expand, the bar was moved down stairs. Beginning the era, which would later be known as the 600 Cafe. Never would Rose have dreamed that the 600 Cafe would become the anchor tenant of Downtown Main, Miles City, Montana. She was very active in the Catholic Church and in helping the community. For the past several years Rose hosted the Harvest Dinner, a benefit for the Catholic Church, which will continue as a tribute in her name. Rose was also an avid traveler, exploring much of the world near and far.

Rose is survived by two sons: Chris "Butch" Grenz of Miles City, MT; and Carter "Ike" Grenz of Flippin, AR; stepdaughters: Sheila Koon of Vista, CA; Joan Marie of Chico, CA; and Marcella Olson of Bismarck, ND; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mrs. Grenz was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Chris, and her children: James "Spike" Grenz, Tom Grenz, Gardner Grenz, and Betty Wilhelm.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Sacred Heart Parish.
