On April 15, 2024, Rose (Hafla) Schantz passed away at her home on 11 Arrow Circle with family and the lord by her side. She was literally a once in a century type Montana woman, holding steadfast to her Catholic faith, her love of family and a rich understanding of the value one’s work can make in the lives of others.
Rose was born April 1, 1924 to Anton Joseph and Agnes Hafla at their family home on the Hafla Homestead near Waston Flats. Rose joined five siblings, Anna, Mary, Joe, Anton and Agnes; later accompanied by Margie, John, Richard and Vince.
During her formative years Rose attended the single-room Hafla School House. Rose learned from her mother how to sew, create baked goods and the art of canning. From her father she learned how to break horses and ride. The family raised a variety of livestock, Rose was a skilled shepherd, tending to the sheep daily. The family also farmed, growing wheat, barley, corn, as well as maintaining a large garden. Rose often shared her childhood memory of plum trees and the smell of poppy.
In eighth grade she left the homestead and moved to Miles City to attend Washington School, living with her sister Anna, husband Fred Dyba. She attended her first year of High School in Cohagen, living in a dormitory with several of her classmates. Her sophomore through senior year’s she attended Sacred Heart High School, working at Holy Rosary Hospital in the mornings and evenings to cover her room and board. The year of Rose’s graduation in 1942 her father passed unexpectedly of Spotted Fever contracted by a tick. Rose and her siblings looked after their mother until she passed in 1953.
Out of High School Rose began work at Sweetheart Bakery as a bookkeeper. In 1943 she met and was courted by Casper (Cap) Schantz who was working as a vehicle attendant at Beacon-Carter for Cliff White and R.D Shipley. Rose and Cap were wed May 24, 1944.
Shortly after their nuptials the couple moved to Hillside Place to work with Cap’s sister, Margaret, and her husband Paul Dyba. Their first child, Vera Mae, was born on the ranch in 1945.
In 1948 the young family moved back to Miles City where Rose worked at Montgomery Wards and Cap returned for a brief stint at Beacon-Carter before joining Cliff White with his endeavor to build what would become Red Rock Village. Cap worked at the Block Plant crushing and forming scoria, the red foundation for what was the first eleven motel units on property.
In 1950 they welcomed their second child, Rose Mary. By 1952 when Jane Marie was born, the family was living on premise of the Red Rock in the corner dwelling unit. Both Cap and Rose assisted travelers with motel accommodations and managed the cafe. Further growing Red Rock, Cap’s brother, George, joined to manage the Drive-In upon its completion.
In 1954, their first son, CB, was born. The family continued to work with White to grow the business, adding a supper club and bunk house. 1957 brought Rose and Cap’s youngest, Cliff. As they raised their family, generations of Miles City residents, Eastern Montana patrons, and weary travelers came to know Rose and Cap as the friendly and inviting faces at Red Rock Village.
Their children grew, attending Sacred Heart and Custer County High School and eventually began families of their own. In 1977 they took full ownership of the Red Rock Village and moved into their present residence at 11 Arrow Circle. Sadly, in 1985 Rose lost Cap to cancer.
With her Catholic faith, strong will and determination she continued to work. She took joy in cultivating her garden, calling upon what her mother taught her by canning dilly beans, pickles and making salsa. Visitors rarely left her home without one of these delicacies in tow. She loved her sixteen grandchildren immensely, making baby blankets for each of them. Later turning her blankets into a small cottage industry, supplying them to friends and families in the area to commemorate the birth of a loved one.
In 1992 Rose’s eldest daughter, Vera, succumb to a battle with cancer. Rose again hung tight to her faith, family, and work. By that time, she was working with her sons at Red Rock Sporting Goods. Throughout the 90’s, 00’s, and 10’s Rose could be found assisting area high school students with finding the perfect pair of shoes or proper equipment for their athletic endeavors. She truly enjoyed being around young people, and as many would tell you, they enjoyed her too.
Over the years, great grandchildren joined the family her and Cap began, thirty-eight to date. Rose also welcomed three great-great grandchildren to the family. She loved each of them and always had a caring curiosity for how they were doing. Their health and happiness were top-of-mind.
Rose retired from formal work at 90, however, she continued to bake, garden, can and sew until her passing. She reached the century mark earlier this month and had a small celebration with family.
Rose is survived by her sibling, Agnes Cremer and her children Rosemary (David) Olson, Jane (Steven) Lackman, C.B. (Judy) Schantz, and Cliff (Marilyn) Schantz.
Rose’s children will hold a rosary for her on Wednesday, April 24 at 6 pm at Sacred Heart Church. On Thursday, April 25, formal services will be held at 11 am at Sacred Heart Church. Should friends desire, memorials can be made to the Sacred Heart Church. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com.

Soooo sorry to learn of our loved ones passing!! Rose was my next door neighbor for over 40 years and became not only a friend but also family to me! I’m so glad she made the 100 year goal! Rose was a classy hard working lady and always had a project going whether it was her beautiful yard and flowers, her well tended garden, her seasonal canning projects, or making baby quilts and quilts for her much loved family members. I will always remember the many many times we sat together on her garage chairs and shared our secrets, our thoughts and just thoroughly enjoyed being together! I will love you always Rose and look forward to the day we can just sit together again in eternity! I know that the angels have escorted you to heaven and you are face to face with our Lord Jesus!

Dear CB, Judy and the entire Schantz family — I have such fond memories of your mom, through my dad, Tom Hanel (her cousin). She mesmerized me with her literal beauty and spunky spirit and ever present smile and quick wit. As far back as my teenage years, I remember being so impressed with her successful business endeavors at a time when all we young girls were taught typing in high school so we could be good secretaries! She and I talked about that one time and I can still remember her saying that you have to work hard to succeed, but that family was the most important of all. She leaves behind an incredible legacy in her family and an everlasting impact on Miles City. Our sincere condolences to all of you.
In love and friendship, Sally and Frank Cifala

When I arrived at the Schantz family home on Pleasant Street, my life was not only saved, but I was given the gift of example of how to live a life. Uncle Cap, Aunt Rose and their remarkable children immersed me in all the virtues of a spiritual family. Their love of God and each other, respectful conduct, hard work, humility, and selflessness were shared with me and anyone fortunate to know them. In my Aunt Rose, the Lord blessed me with the gift of one of His remarkable Saints. Aunt Rose showed me what the face of courage, determination, hope, and inspiration looked like. She exhibited a special presence, a naturally joyous demeanor underpinned with a discreet, but firm, standard of expectation and behavior. I loved her quiet dignity, her caring and understanding touch, her passion, and her strength. Her very soul radiated around her.
Mere mortal words, nor earthly treasures, could ever serve as adequate expression of my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for Aunt Rose, and her family’s contributions to me. I believe that the greatest reward to her, and them, is to attempt to live a life by their example. That is my prayer. Now reunited with Uncle Cap, I will remember her always.
