Ross Alcott Parker Sr, was born into this world to Jennie Seminole Parker and Shirley Ross Parker, on May 31, 1960, at Crow Agency. Ross’s Cheyenne name was Big Spider Max’veho, he was named after his grandpa. He was the oldest out of his
siblings. Growing up Ross liked to ride horseback and go fishing. He attended St. Labre school where he met his friends who became brothers and enjoyed playing football and wrestling.
Ross was part of the IAP, Indian Action Program, in Butte, MT where he stayed for a couple of years. At such a young age Ross was initiated into the Kitfox society, which he was very proud of, and enjoyed teaching his sons to practice his traditional ways of life. He was a sweat keeper which was given to him by his grandmother. For many years he was an integral part of The Little Bighorn Ride and he enjoyed teaching his children about the importance of the history behind it.
Ross grew up on the family ranch also known as Parker’s Poor Farm, which is where he learned the value of hard work himself. Ross was blessed with four children of his own, which he passed these values onto, along with many others.
He was an avid outdoorsman, he loved teaching all his kids how to hunt and fish, along with anyone who was willing to learn. His love for the outdoors was one way he brought his family together, whether they wanted to or not. This love also extended into his employment, such as firefighting, Blackfooted-Ferret Research Program, and bringing the buffalo out of
Yellowstone back to the tribe. Ross was a skilled carpenter, and worked for Northern Cheyenne Tribal Housing for many years.
In later years, he was blessed with two granddaughters, Kara and Sharlyce. He enjoyed
spending time with them and watching them grow. In the most recent years, he was blessed with six granddaughters, the twins, Maddison and Maci (little blue eyes and Raerae), Rosslynn (Rossi), Kami (Tinks), Kayleigha (Kiki), and Hopelynn (Hopes), and two great grandsons, Keltyn and Karson, most recently a new grandson, baby Rocky. His grandchildren and great
grandchildren were the light of his life. He especially enjoyed playing tricks on them or teasing them to get them to giggle or smile. His favorite trick was pulling the candy from behind the ears. He enjoyed sharing candy and pop with them, even when mom said no. He attended all sport Festivities’ when he could to show all his encouragement and love.
His disabilities did not inhibit him from helping people or working in the outdoors, such as chopping wood, which he enjoyed. Ross also took care of his mom for many years, until she moved to the heritage.
When he wasn’t in the outdoors his favorite pastimes were arm wrestling and Bowling League. During Ross’s Pool playing years he joined Pool League, where the Pool Community became his family. He enjoyed the rivalries and competition from everyone. He especially
enjoyed trying to beat his sister Flora “The State Champ” whom he was proud of. Ross would
always encourage others and give pointers. He sure loved his “Pool Family”. We could share so many stories about our dad, as I’m sure you all could too. He lived a good simple life.
The Family would like to thank Morris Bement Jr, Northern Cheyenne EMS, the IHS, the Medical Staff at St. Vincent, especially his ICU nurse Madison. I would also like to thank everyone who loved my dad and took care of him throughout his years and those that were with him in these past few months. He loved each and every one of you. To us you will always be
The Man, The Myth, The Legend “Papa”. We love you dad, and we will miss you. We find comfort in knowing that you are with your sons and everyone else who passed on before you.
Ross has many family and friends too numerous to mention by name, but you all know who you are and the special place you held in his heart; always remember he loved you all.
