In Memory Of

Roy Eugene LaFranier, age 76, of Lame Deer

September 30, 1944 – October 11, 2020

Roy Eugene LaFranier, (Mahpevana’hane, Kills On Water) was born on September 30, 1944 to Rose Eastman and Jerome LaFranier. Roy started his journey on October 11, 2020 with his family surrounding him.

Roy was raised on the Kirby Creek with his 3 siblings Arnold, Gerald, Mary Jane, and numerous relatives that were all considered siblings to him. Growing up he attended Busby Boarding School and was a “Proud Busby Eagle”. He graduated from high school in 1963, then shortly after was drafted into the United States Army, serving in Vietnam for 2 years, and honorably discharged. He returned home and worked as a ranch hand on Kirby Creek and Steer Enterprise taking care of over 5,000 head of cattle with his childhood friend and brother Mickey Caywood. His children heard many stories that always started with “At Steer Enterprise”. He met his wife of 52years, Rose Hiwalker, and they were married on June 28th 1968 in Sheridan, Wyoming. They had 5 children Cleve, Fonz, Leslie, Marti, and Misty.

Roy worked as an instructor of heavy equipment for the Indian Action Program, a bus driver for St. Labre Indian School, a police officer for the Northern Cheyenne Police Department, and various road construction jobs where he eventually retired from the BIA roads department. He often sat around his table talking about building roads with his good friends Leroy Runsabove and Clifford Spotted Wolf.

Roy loved the outdoors and always took his children out on adventures either hunting, fishing or just cruising the backroads. He also spent many summers camping at Yellowtail Dam and Tongue River Reservoir with all his Kirby family.

He would challenge anybody that knew how to play cribbage to a game whenever they came to the house and also played many games with his grandson Tye and his daughter Misty. His favorite time of the year was basketball season when he would turn on his radio to listen to his grandchildren, which made him very proud. He was an avid Golden State Warriors fan and loved to watch his game shows.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Rose Eastman and Jerome LaFranier, his brother Gerald, nephew Shawn Del, Sisters in law Hubba LaFranier and Pat Hiwalker-Hossner, Granddaughter Alexa, Brothers in law, Hank Hiwalker, Weaver D. Hiwalker, Cleveland Hiwalker, and George Hiwalker.

Please accept our heartfelt condolences as we all pray for healing from this terrible loss to our family of “ Roy Eugene” as I often remember him being called. Roy was a warrior to the end, even though he would not boast about it he carried a piece of that war with the shrapnel in his knee. He was kind and joyful and we will miss our dear cousin and neighbor and the hero that he was
