Samuel Dale Bennett, known to his family and friends as Sam, was born August 18, 1908, the son of James and Sara (Procunier) Bennett in Newcastle, Wyoming. As a young child, he moved with his parents to their homestead, just south east of Gillette, Wyoming, which is now known as Sleepy Hollow. He was raised and educated in Gillette, Wyoming. After his schooling, he helped on the family farm. On November 25, 1935, he married Ivalee Coy Osborn in Spearfish, South Dakota. In 1941, he moved to town and worked for the highway department and the City of Gillette until 1949, when he began working for the CB&Q Railroad, which took him and his family to Sheridan, Wyoming. In the early 1960s, he retired from the CB&Q Railroad. In the mid 1970s, after his wife passed away, he moved to Bakersfield, California. In 1985, he returned to Gillette, Wyoming. During his retirement, he was very active in the Campbell County Senior Center; he especially enjoyed playing cards there. In 1991, he moved into the Birchwood Apartments and in 2001, he became a resident of the Pioneer Manor Nursing Home.

Sam enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing cards. He was also a lifetime member of the Elks BPO #520 in Sheridan, Wyoming. Sam enjoyed watching horse races and fireworks.
