Samuel John Bachman, 42, of Lewistown, passed away Monday, Nov. 10, 2003, at Seasons Hospice in Rochester, Minn., following a long, valiant battle with cancer.
Sam was born in Lewistown on June 2, 1961, the son of Paul Gale and Rose Evangeline Berg Vollmer Bachman. He attended schools in Lewistown and Richland, Wash., and received a graduate diploma.
His first job, at age 13, was with a carnival operating the live pony ride. Moving from town to town, he camped out under the stars. Samuel became proficient in many skills, including welding, carpentry, mechanic and was head sawyer and a millwright in a sawmill.
His greatest desire was following in his fathers footsteps in the art of saddle making and leather goods. His training began at Toomeys. He learned, as his father Gale did, that a good saddle begins from the inside out. He took over and ran Gales Saddle Shop in Lewistown.
Sam enjoyed music, fishing, hunting, traveling, photography and spending time with family and friends. He took great pride in riding the Mother Hubbard saddle, his dads last creation.
His friends will remember him as a true artist, a perfectionist, a unique original with integrity and a great sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Gale Bachman; and four half-siblings, Virginia Bachman, Mary Bachman, Donald Bachman, and Valentine Bernard Bernie Vollmer.
He is survived by his mother, Rose Berg Vollmer Bachman of Lewistown; 11 siblings, Elizabeth Bachman Sawyer, Evangeline Banjo Bachman Banfill, Catherine Bachman Anderson Lassen, Joanna Bachman Anderson, Joseph Paul Ray Bachman Anderson, Arlyn Vollmer, Carol Lynn Vollmer Rusch, Milyn Vollmer, Betty Bachman Doutt, Richard Bachman and Katheryn Bachman Roberts; and numerous nieces and nephews.
