Sarah Belle Tubbs Hellyer, age 98 1/2, of Jordan MT passed away on Feb 17, 2008 in Billings MT from complications following surgery.
Sarah was born September 14, 1909 in Harlem MT to Harrison & Elvira Ballentine Tubbs. In 1912 her father was shot and killed during a dispute over hay ground. The following year her mom married James Edward Ryan and they moved to the Brusett area in Garfield Co. Sarah went to school at Eiler, and later at Spring Creek, where she traveled the 6 miles on horseback. Over the years George, John, Marguerite, June and James completed the Ryan Family.
On June 20, 1932, Sarah married Lawrence Leo Hellyer in Forsyth. One of the stories she liked to tell was how Lawrence jokingly told Sarah she would have to sell her horse to pay for the marriage license. She told him that she would not sell her horse for no darned man. They ranched in the Sand Springs area where Sarah worked side by side with Lawrence, breaking horses, herding sheep, and whatever else she was called upon to do, including bearing and raising seven children.
Sarah was a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and loved living and sharing the gospel.
She enjoyed her ranch work, being a friend to others, telling riddles, reading her scriptures, visiting and being with family. She also enjoyed going to the Senior Center and usually referred to herself as the recycled teenager.
Survivors include three daughters, Rhoda Phillips of Lakota, ND; Flossie (Curtis) Phipps ofBrusett; Leora Mercer of Jordan; two sons, Larry (Ellen) of Tacoma, WA; and Virgil (Carol) of Jordan; 34 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren and 33 great great-grandchildren.
Sarah was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence, daughters Betty and Lois, son-in-law Frank Shorty Mercer, great grandson Michael Smotherman and brothers George and John.
