Scott Simpson Preston, age 77 passed away on January 12, 2024 in Miles City.
Scott was born in Lamar Colorado to James Leander Preston and Ruth Christine Preston on July 15, 1946. He moved to Miles City at a young age when his father changed locations for work with the VA hospital. Scott graduated from Custer County High School in 1964 and loved to play in the band. When he was in college, he and some friends started their own band and traveled around the area to play.
He met Deb Preston working at Gamble Robinson, where she also worked, but in Minnesota. They were married in 1978 and moved to Minnesota in 1980. Though their relationship wasn’t permanent, they had two children together and remained friends afterwards.
Scott had a gift for humor and conversation, so his two careers suited him: sales and tax accountant. He was able to meet new people and help them every day. He particularly liked working for Northern Tool and Equipment, meeting people from all over the country.
He returned to Miles City in 2002 to care for his aging parents, and preferred the small-town life, so decided to stay rather than return to Minnesota.
Scott had a wide variety of interests, though he loved reading and music the most. He was also a die-hard Denver Broncos fan and cheered them on every time he watched them play.
Scott is survived by his two children, Danielle (Andrew) McKay and Jake Preston, his grandson Kierin McKay, his former spouse Debra Preston, his brother Steve Preston, his nieces Kari (Rob) Stevens and Kayla (Mark) Jones, and his nephew Jeramy (Ashley) Preston. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Christine Preston.
A private ceremony will be held by his family at a later date. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com.

Scott was a great CCHS classmate and bandmate. Fun story: We’re camping on our ranch. The “road” we were on was so treacherous I had everyone walking as I drove the Scout up the steep slope. In the middle of the track was a small “jack pine”. I drove over it realizing at the last moment that Scott was right behind us. The tree flipped up and smacked Scott knocking him back down the slope! Everyone thought it was hilarious, even Scott.

Dear Preston family, Scott and I were friends in high school and had many wonderful times together. He had a marvelous sense of humor and the ability to poke fun at himself, as well. RIP, Scott, you will be missed.

Scott was one of my best friends in high school. He was a super trumpet player and was part of my wedding party. He, John Lantis, Bill Stewart and I rode many miles in his yellow and white ‘55 chev. Sadly, we didn’t stay connected over the years. See you someday in the “pep band” in the sky.

Our condolences to the Preston family.

Scott was one of the shining heartbeats of the Concert and Pep Bands at CCHS who graced us with his talent during the unforgettable years of the Denver and Portland trips. You were valued and admired. I like to think that “someone” has a new solo arrangement of “I left my heart in San Francisco” already written for you to perform with that Pep Band up above getting ready for the next basketball game. May you rest in peace.
John Lantis says

Scott, doug, and I were in band and pep band together, Scott and I were in the trumpet section. Scott could really play that horn he sat next to Randy Fordyce. I have known Scott for most of my life and have many fond memories of him. Scott and I lived together for a short time in Billings years ago. Scott was looking for work and saw they needed welders on the new Scott feed lot. He went to the library and checked out a book on welding and studied it that night and went and got a job welding the next day. He saw few obsticals in life. Leif

I worked with Scott at Gamble Robinson for a few years. He was always up to something that was entertaining. We had a gift exchange one year at Christmas and he gave me a live chicken that he got out of some ranchers yard. I believe beer was involved that night. RIP.

My condolences to the family. I’m sorry to hear of Scott’s passing., he was a wonderful and talented person. Scott and I worked one Summer for the City Street crew cleaning the mud out of the storm sewers with a clam-shell bucket that would twist when it came out of the hole and fling mud all over us.. It was truly the dirty job that somebody had to do and when we went to work we would look around and suddenly realize that “somebody” was us! With his wonderful sense of humor it was a pleasure to work with him as he made a really crappy job a laugh a minute. We had to spend a lot of time in the 600 Lounge and Range Riders that summer..

I wish you peace Scott. We were friends at CCHS and roomies in college. He had a smile that could light up a room! You never could be down around Scott and he demonstrated through action that he cared about people. His kind soul will be missed.
