In Memory Of

Sigrid Laird, age 78, of Miles City.

January 14, 1937 – February 11, 2015

Sigrid Ragna Laird of Miles City, MT passed away February 11 at home, surrounded by her family.

Sigrid was born in Bozeman, MT January 14, 1937 to parents David and Ella (Crane) Rivenes, and spent most of her life in Miles City. After graduating Custer County High School in 1955, Sigrid attended Purdue University, where she obtained degrees in Physical Education and Biology and swam for the Boilmakers’ swim team. Following her graduation Sigrid taught P.E. in both Powell, Wyoming and Naugatuck, Connecticut. On December 27, 1961 Sigrid married Loren “Bo” Laird and moved to Ripon, California, where she spent the next fifteen years raising their four children, substitute teaching, coaching the local swim team, and volunteering for many clubs and organizations.

Sigrid and Bo returned to Miles City in 1976, and Sigrid immersed herself in the Miles City community once again. She taught adaptive P.E. for several years, and from 1990 to 2002 she taught biology at Custer High before retiring.   She also managed the Miles City pool, taught swim lessons, and coached the swim team in the summers. We are pretty certain she taught everyone in Miles City how to swim. We’re also fairly sure she invited everyone she ever met to come to Miles City for the Bucking Horse Sale, and then added them to her Christmas card list.

Since her retirement, Sigrid has remained active, enjoying her time as a member of the Presbyterian Church, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Convent Keepers, the Red Cross, and several national organizations.

Sigrid loved her community and took great pride in being a Miles Citian. She participated in every community event she could and attended as many programs in town as possible. She enjoyed traveling to see her children and grandchildren, playing bunko with her friends, reading and discussing books in her book club, and attending sporting events at Custer High. She also loved discovering treasures at garage sales, attending Women’s Club conferences, drinking coffee with friends, and serving on the library board. Sigrid was a true collector, with vast collections of everything from tea sets to porcelain shoes, and from Santa Clauses to dolls. Her greatest collection, however, was her collection of friends, which she treasured above any of the others. Sigrid’s friends were numerous and invaluable, and she loved them all dearly.

Sigrid is preceded in death by her parents David and Ella Rivenes, her sister Sue Kuehl, and her beloved husband Loren “Bo” Laird. She is survived by her sister Jen Jensen (Gary) of St. Louis, MO, daughters Stephanie Pratt (Greg) and Cameron Burton (Victor) of Ripon, CA, son David Laird (Amy) of Ephrata, WA, and daughter Bridget Laird (Dave Batchelder) of Ovando, MT. She also leaves ten grandchildren she loved beyond measure: Lauren, Jacob, Kyra, and Mac Laird, Angus, Ella, Will, and Hattie Batchelder, Zachariah Pratt, and Molly Burton.

A graveside service for Sigrid will be held Tuesday, February 17 at 10:00 am at the Custer County Cemetery, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall of the Presbyterian Church. A Celebration of Life in Sigrid’s honor will be held in late July to coincide with the class reunions. Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home of Miles City is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Convent Keepers, the Miles City Public Library, or a charity of one’s choice.

Sigrid will be missed by a lot of people. She was special in so many ways. Going to the Miles City Academy (formerly Ursuline Convent) will not be the same. She left a huge hole in the Convent Keepers, like she did in so many of her other groups. It was a great pleasure getting to know her.

So sad to see of Sigrid’s passing. I remember many a day in the cold water at the Oasis, with Sigrid chanting… “Take a breath, blow bubbles…” country kids swimming lessons. And in later years, dissecting frogs in her science class at CCDHS. She will truly be missed. Thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of such an amazing lady.

Losing Sigrid is the same for me as losing a big sister — a funny, loving, in-your-face big sister. It means so much to me to have been able to spend time with her and Jen this past summer. There are so many memories to keep close, not least of which was the dinner at Rib ‘n Chop when she disallowed our having the ‘big’ steak because she wouldn’t pay for it, and then our trip down memory lane singing all those silly old songs and calling attention to ourselves. Seems like ol’ times! She was always the same — incorrigibly opinionated and so much fun. One of a kind, and I will miss her too much.

Even when they had to be extremely busy in their respective offices, they took the time to find out what your club (Culbertson GFWC) was doing & how they could be helpful. To find either one of them in a large room, you just followed the sound of much laughter. I am so sorry for your loss.

As a friend and colleague, I could always count on Sigrid to “tell it like it is”, and always with a smile. Our Custer County Historical Society will miss her as our anchor member. Sigrid has been a Miles City staple, I always loved running into her at CCDHS when she was taking tickets during tournaments. Her kind heart would ask of my family and what they were up to and despite my family being big she would remember who was where and doing what the last time we talked. Heaven gained another beautiful angel and I can see her and Bo watching over us all.

We send our heart felt sympathies and prayers to all of Sigrid’s family and friends.
My husband an myself have been in Miles City since July and my husband is the new U. Methodist Minister. We got to meet the two ministers of the Presbyterian Church as they graciously helped with Bible School at our church. they were wonderful, and with a baby on the way that could have come at any time.
Reading Sigrid’s obit showed what a lovely person she was and how import she was to the community. What a blessing she was.
Before coming to miles City we were serving 4 churches in the Harlowton, Mt. area. The church in Harlowton we were Federated because we were both Methodist and Presbyterian.
Wish we could have known Sigfrid personally as she would have been a wonderful person to get to know. I noticed that she was a collector of many things as well as dolls, and I do as well. Again condolences and know now that Sigfrid is now in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior, and on her final journey.
She has been on our church prayer list, and her this yesterday. God Bless!!

We will miss Sigrid! Spending a wonderful summer at the Rivemes’ home where one become a another “daughter” pretty quickly and finding love with all three girls. Watching the girls swim and enjoying that wonderful pool and beach; enjoying having Sigrid as a bridesmaid at our wedding —and much, much later renewing the friendship with Sigrid and traveling to Miles City to visit Ella, Sue and Sigrid. It was hard to see her fail, but her spirit was still jaunty and I will miss her wonderful monthly “cousin” calls. She made sure the families across the US stayed connected. Bon voyage, Sigrid. It makes me so happy to hear people say I’m just like her. We had a very special relationship, one I have with no other. I am so lucky to have grown up having a grandma who cares and loves me as much as she does and at the same time, is like my oldest best friend, I could talk to her about anything and know no matter what, she would have my back and love me. Grandma Sigrid was the best Grandma ever! I always loved going to her house and playing intense games of spot it, and her sneaking us candy and chips when my parents were away. I remember the last time i saw her. It was around Christmas, and we helped her decorate her christmas tree. That year she had a red theme (she always had different themes for christmas) and we covered the tree with so much red tinsel, you could barley even see the actual tree. I love her so much, and miss her more than ever.
