Stanley Bredeson, a long-time resident of Miles City, passed away after a brief illness on April 13, 2016. Stan was surrounded by family members at the time of his passing. Stanley was 80 years old.
Stanley was born on the family farm close to Nekoma, North Dakota, on February 23, 1936. He was the third child of Myrtle Bakken and Alvin Bredeson. After high school he worked for the Soo Line Railroad as a depot agent. On July 18, 1960, he married Marlene “Molly” Domres in Langdon, North Dakota. Stanley served his country in the Army as a radio dispatcher during the Korean conflict. On his return, he attended and played basketball for Lake Region Junior College at the age of 29. His teammates called him Gramps, which was a name that later his grandkids used fondly. He went on to earn a degree in accounting at the University of North Dakota and was a proud alumni of the Fighting Sioux.
Stan’s long career included work as an accountant, a Pinkerton Man, surveyor, farmer, and a parts hauler. Stan was an accomplished gardener, and enjoyed working in his yard and out at the family garden on the Tongue River.
As tough as he was understated, Stan will be remembered for his warm smile, easy conversational style, endless teasing and good humor. Always an athlete and enthusiastic sports fan, Stan was an avid supporter of his kids’ and grandkids’ teams and events, and attended hundreds of games over the years.
The Bucking Horse Sale will not be the same without his insight and knowledge of the racing form or scouting the ponies. He never missed a parade in 38 years of living in Miles City. He mentored many friends and family members and we were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Stan. He often said he preferred the company of children and animals. Stan was always up for a game of cribbage and a cold beverage. Additionally, he was a member of the American Legion.
Stanley was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Molly, his son, Bradley (Patti) Bredeson of Miles City and daughter Marty (Eric) Ohs of Bozeman. Stanley always enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, Aaron, Ashley and Abby Rustan, and Aubree Ohs.
Also surviving are his sister Betty Dewey of Pasadena, CA, Allan (Silvia) Bredeson of Captain Cook, HI, Joyce (Rick) Passmore of Duarte, CA and Galen (Barb) Bredeson of Great Falls, MT. He also has several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend sincere gratitude to the Holy Rosary Hospice ladies and Dr. Martin Lucas for their outstanding care.
There will be a memorial service at a later date. The burial will be in the Eastern Montana State Veterans Cemetery in Miles City. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at: www.stevensonandsons.com.
