Stanley Mortensen Benson was born September 14, 1937 in Cowley Wyoming the youngest son of Leonard A. and Laura (Mortensen) Benson. He was raised and educated in Lovell. Stan married Sharleen Bassett on November 18, 1957 in Lovell. This is where the couple made their home together and started their family. As a younger man Stan worked in road construction. He also owned his own truck and worked for various companies driving for them. In August of 1970 Stan moved his family to Colstrip, Montana. Here he worked as a foreman for Long Construction. Residing in Colstrip over a seven year period Stan and Sharleen grew their family by one while there. In 1977 the family returned to Lovell adding the last child to complete their family of eight. Stan delighted in his children and his wife he loved them dearly and that was reflected in the amount of time he spent with them. In 1988 Sharleen and Stan made their last move to Gillette. Stan worked as a heavy equipment operator. Though Stans family never felt as if he retired he did refrain from employment in 1994.
Stan enjoyed cooking, the Big Horn Mountains: fishing and camping within them, restoring old cars, classic car shows and admiring them on the road as well. He will be remembered for his fun joking manner (that he passed on to his kids) ability to visit with everyone and his warm sincere heart.
Survivors include his wife of forty seven and a half years Sharleen; six children: Jan (Charles) Vincent of Colstrip, Montana, Joleen (Fred) Crosby of Thermopolis, Wyoming, Michael (Nicole) Benson of Gillette, Wyoming, Julie (Rick) Banks of Lovell, Wyoming, Malissa (Rick) Applegate of Fairbanks, Alaska and Mitchell Benson of Gillette, Wyoming; eighteen grandchildren; three sisters: Alma Jolley, Verna Walker, and Ruth Olsen all of Lovell, Wyoming.
