In Memory Of

Terry Cline, age 78, of Miles City.

December 27, 1936 – May 19, 2015

Terry Cline passed away May 19, 2015 at St Vincent Hospital in Billings MT, the same hospital he was born in 78 years earlier on Dec 27, 1936. Terry was the eldest of six children born to   Art and Bicky Cline. He attended Billings Catholic schools, graduating from Billings Central in 1955. Terry graduated from University of Portland in 1959 with a degree in Business. While travelling home by train for Christmas break, Terry met a pretty nursing student named Karen Doherty. They were married at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Portland, OR in 1960. To this union five children were born: Kerry, Jennifer, Mary Beth, Patrick & Tony.

Terry served in the Army Reserves starting in 1958 and was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. From 1961-1966, Terry worked as a manager for Food Service Companies throughout the west.

In 1966 Terry Cline purchased the Miles City Laundry from his uncle Jack Cline. For the next 28 years, Terry, as boss, with his children among his “family” of employees, operated a successful small business in Miles City. Terry sold the operation in 1994 and had been happily retired since. In the early years of his retirement, Terry could be seen tooling around town on his motorcycle, with one of his many grandchildren safely ensconced on the back seat of “Big Daddy’s” bike.

Terry was very active in the Miles City community as a citizen-leader. Terry served as a a city councilman as well as on numerous boards, including Holy Rosary Hospital, the police commission, St Vincent de Paul, US Bank, Eagles Manor and Miles Community College.

Terry was engaged socially and as a volunteer in several other civic organizations, including Lions Club, Meals on Wheels and March of Dimes. One of his favorite meetings was his coffee club, which met daily.

A lifelong and devoted Catholic, Terry was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and its Knights of Columbus chapters. His faith helped to guide him toward service to others, especially those most in need in the community. His devotion to his friends and especially his family was legendary, from Miles City to Arlington, VA to Seattle to Portland.

Terry became known as “Big Daddy” to his children and grandchildren and to the entire Cline Clan. He was a loving husband to Karen, and a wonderful, life-giving, wise-cracking father, father-in-law, uncle, and grandfather, steady in his love for his sprawling Irish clan. Big-hearted, compassionate and generous, Terry was the first to reach out to friends and family in need. His unique sense of humor brought laughter to many, and occasional embarrassment to some!

We miss you Big Daddy!!

Terry is survived by his wife Karen; his five children Kerry (Belinda) Cline of Roseville, MN; Jennifer (Paul) Hogan of Portland, OR; Mary Beth (Chuck) James of Arlington, VA; Patrick (Jeanne) Cline of Miles City; & Tony (Sharon) of Billings. Terry is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, as well as by his 5 siblings Sr. Mary Arthel, Danny, Carole, Kevin, Colleen and his sister-in-law Diane Doherty. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, & cousins, including members of the Cline, McCormick & Hall clans. Terry was preceded in death by his grandson Dylan.

We were so sorry to learn of Terry’s death. Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers, It was so good to see both of you last year for Bishop Berg’s ceremony for becoming a bishop. Again, please accept our deepest sympathy.
