In Memory Of

Theodore “Doug” Wall, age 74 of Miles City

December 4, 1942 – December 31, 2016

Theodore “Doug” Wall was born December 4, 1942 in Denver, CO, the son of Walter J “Ted” and Vera Scott Wall.  They lived at Deer Trail, CO until 1955, when they moved to a ranch at Moon Creek near Miles City.

Doug attended grade school at Deer Trail, CO and Moon Creek Country School.  He attended high school at Custer County High where he played football and wrestled.  Doug won a state wrestling title as a senior in 1960.  His rodeo career began in Miles City at the age of 13 when he rode his first bareback horse.  At about the same time he ventured out on his own to pay his rent and entry fees as he worked on the Alvin Howard Ranch and at the Miles City Sales Yard, where later he was the yard foreman for seven years in the 1980’s.

He began riding bareback broncs seriously as a junior in high school.  He turned professional in 1962 with the card number 8730, which is a current number, as well as a gold card number.  As a member of the PRCA, he competed in Bareback Riding and Steer Wrestling throughout the United States and Canada. In 1965, 70-72 Doug won the Bareback Riding at the Miles City Bucking Horse Sale. In 1968, he won the average in both Bareback and Saddle Bronc riding at the Bucking Horse Sale out of 70 cowboys.

Doug served as the pickup man for the Bucking Horse Sale from 1982-1999.  He spent many years as a pickup man and working for Marvin Brookman Rodeo.  He also spent eight years in the Midwest as a pickup man and rodeo foreman for Bob Barnes with Barnes Pro Rodeo, a PRCA stock contractor, from Cherokee, IA.  During his time in the Midwest he competed in the Bareback riding and Steer Wrestling as well.  He won the reserve champion Bareback rider for the Great Lakes Circuit three different times.

Doug worked for many other stock contractors over the years including Ike Sankey, Jim Korkow, Hank Franzen, Harry Knight, and Bobby Steiner.  Doug also worked as a pickup man for the Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals for nine years as well as numerous circuit rodeos including Helena, Livingston, Wolf Point, and Red Lodge to name a few.  In addition to picking up rodeos, Doug helped with the rough stock at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas for 20 years.  He retired from picking up at age 62 but continued working for Brookman rodeo for several more years.

Doug worked for numerous ranches over the years which included Bud Kramer, Alvin Howard, Art Reukauf, Benny Binnion, CM Coffee, Butch Krutzfelt, and time at the LO.  He also drove truck, tended bar, and dealt cards.

Doug was inducted into the Montana Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame and Wall of Fame in 2007, and into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame Class 2015 for his contributions to Western Heritage and the Cowboy Way of Life.

Doug is survived by Pam, his wife and companion of 34 years; sons Ted (Chris) Wall of Townsend, MT and children Tess, Erin, and Lane; Lonnie Loomis of Elko, NV and children Hadley, Lakota, and Walker; Donnie (Jennie) Loomis of Toowoomba, Australia and children Mitch, Pruitt, and McKoy; Colby (Kris) Loomis of Riverton, WY and children Piper, Tatum, Kyler, and Addison; and Alvin Arnoldt of Miles City, MT; daughters Janette Wehrer of Fort Morgan, CO, and Jody Frahm of Fort Morgan, CO and children Brandon, Austin, and Allen; sister Donna Rae Cooper of Billings, MT; brother Dave (Charla) Wall of Kit Carson, CO; Scotty Bledsoe and many other nieces and nephews, and nine great grandchildren.

Doug is preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Jean Plummer, brothers Dennis and Denton, and granddaughter Breanna Frahm.

From the early 1960’s when we rode bareback horses at the Bucking Horse Sales, to watching the boys learn to wrestle, Doug was their second best cheer leader after you!! I am sure Doug and Sonny Linger are both back on their two good Paint Horses discussing the last NFR, and making plans for a rodeo in the big Blue Sky. take care as you are always such wonderful friends. our thoughts and prayers are with you. Pam and family,

Please accept my condolences for your loss. I always respected Doug, and enjoyed watching him pick up…especially at the BHS. Very capable cowboy!

    Pam and family:
I am so sorry to hear of Doug’s passing and you are all in my thoughts and prayers. As you share, talk, and remember, may you truly find that the one you loved so much is still living in your hearts.
I’m glad I got to “pay him back” at the Sherman in Wolf Point for all the “CC ditches” he bought me when I worked for Brookman and Aber! I remember when Charlie met him with “I want to meet the cowboy my wife is buying a drink.” And then Doug entertained us all with rodeo/cowboy stories. Always looked forward to getting a big hug from him when I returned for the Wild Horse Stampede. Great memories. He was one of a kind, a friend and he will be missed. I hope he’s not sharing too many stories about me with Charlie!!! Love to you all, Barbara

So sorry to hear about my good friend and drinking partner even if there was a time we said we had to work with each other we sure as hell wasn’t going to drink together. Doug was one of the best and finest men I ever had the privalege to work with. He always took the outside circle claiming his horses needed the exercise. We had some great times cowboying at Ft Koegh. I know that Doug always claimed we took him along to open gates and I hope when I get up to that big pasture he is waiting there to let me thru the gate. Rick
