In Memory Of

Thomas “T.J.” Underberg, age 25, of Fallon.

Thomas Jay “TJ” Underberg, age 25, of Fallon passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 due to an accident.

TJ was born on October 19, 1987 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, the son of Mark and Donna Underberg.  In TJ’s 25 years he accomplished many things.  During his high school years he was a proud Terry Terrier football player, took basketball stats and was a Big Champ to the grade school classes.  During the summer he worked for many area farmers and ranchers moving irrigation pipe and branding cattle.  His first job was working for Chuck and Helen Jacques irrigating his alfalfa.  After Chuck’s retirement he worked for Mike and Terry Karrels in the summer on the ranch North of Terry, Montana.  After high school graduation he was invited by Carroll College to play football in the Pigskin Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii, he was so proud to be one of the few athletes chosen to play in Hawaii.  After his return from Hawaii, TJ went to work for Advance Well Service in Gillette, Wyoming for about a year and a half.  TJ returned to the Fallon area when work slowed down.  TJ then went to work for Frank Eaton & Sons in the Terry and Lindsay area.  He was employed there for 2 ½ years.  TJ did many different jobs at this wondrous operation.  He found out that he had a love for cattle.  He enjoyed feeding and looking after the cows and calving time.  He loved watching the newborns spring to life.  What TJ most liked was when he was behind the wheel of one of Eaton’s Semi’s.  His first truck driving experience was hauling hay from Yellowstone River to the feedlots north of Terry.  Then grain to the elevator at harvest and hauling cattle from time to time.  TJ often commented that he got more knowledge working for the Eaton family then any book could have ever taught him.  In July 2010, TJ went to work for Cross Petroleum Service in Glendive, Montana.  His job there was delivering bulk oil products to the oil rigs to operate their huge generators and equipment.  TJ liked what he did at Cross Petroleum but what he liked most was the friendship and camaraderie with the people he worked with there.  His job ended November 6, 2012 when an accident on the highway took TJ’s life.

TJ was a kind hearted person with a ready smile and willingness to help anyone, all you had to do was ask and he would be there.  TJ had a passion for the outdoors.  He loved to fish by the Yellowstone and at Sand Stone Lake with his friends.  He enjoyed ABATE poker runs with all his biker buddies including mom and dad and the hog roast and dance after.  He was always there to help clean up the next day.  TJ also helped with Bump & Run as flag person and also at the arena motocross in Terry.  TJ’s favorite pastime was hunting with his family, but he most enjoyed hunting with his best friend, his dad.  TJ never met a stranger and if he did in a matter of minutes they were his friend.  To know him was to love him.  Fly with the angels TJ.

TJ is survived by his parents, Mark and Donna Underberg of Fallon, MT; his grandparents:  Leonard Underberg of Sioux Falls, SD; Harvin and Anna Schlosser of Westport, SD; numerous aunts and uncles:  Donny & Debbie Schlosser of Westport, SD; Dan & Deb0 Schlosser of Westport, SD; Jim & Dixie Hatfield of Craig, CO; Myron & Joyce Underberg of Fallon, MT; Norb & Cyndi Underberg of Sioux Falls, SD; Robert & Linda Proffitt of Larchwood, IA; Carol & Marvin Stoterau of Sioux Falls, SD; and Bruce and Jennifer Underberg of Larchwood, IA; and numerous cousins.  He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mary Underberg.

TJ, there are so many things that won’t be the same without you. Brandings will never be the same without our one man calf wrestler. Mark & Donna you have to be proud of TJ as he was the best of his kind. He kept friends out of fights by just stepping inbetween them. He always stepped up to the plate to help. A perfect example of that was during our beet season when he didn’t really feel like driving truck the night after his 25th bday party, but because we were in a bind he did. He was also a great mentor to younger kids. We are all so sorry and you are in our thoughts and TJ will always be remembered at our house.

Things will never be the same without you. One great memory comes to mind when we think of you; the game “TWISTER”. It was the weekend of my bridal shower and TJ came over to keep Nathan company. After the shower we all came to our house for dinner and drinks. We ended up playing the game Twister. I dont think we have ever laughed so hard. Tj was the first one up and ready to go! Mark and Donna,
TJ was such a sweet little kid and he was my Huggy Bear and for us to be healthy we always had to have our three hugs a day and TIJ…..was always so good about giving the best hugs. Then as he grew, I knew I couldn’t keep calling my Huggy Bear so I ended up calling him my Grizzly Bear but he would still give me the biggest hug. He’d always squeeze me so hard and start giggling and he’d always make me laugh.
I know it’s hard for us to try to understand when we lose a loved one so young….. we always ask why? Over the years the only thing that makes sense to me is I figure GOD needs a Special Angel. TJ earned his wings here on earth and now he he’s flying with the Angel’s in all of God’s Grace.
You know how much I loved TJ and I share your lose as I know so may others do. Just know you are never alone TJ will always be with you, in your hearts and thoughts always……..! My heart is with you call me if you need me. AND TJ I know you can hear me you’re still my Grizzly Bear …. and I Love You !!!!!!

He touched so many many lives and made others a better person just by being their friend. He was a friend to everyone and a stranger to no one. TJ this is not good bye, but see ya later “Big Guy”! Mark and Donna,
I’ll remember TJ with that big smile he always had on his face. I sure enjoyed catching up with him at our June Picnic when he worked for Eaton’s. I’m so sorry for such a huge loss in your life. Praying you feel the love and comfort of God now and in the days ahead.

Thinking of you, not really knowing what to say——except TJ was a part of my extended family and I loved him dearly. He was always getting after me for not letting him know when I might have needed some help. He was a treasure and I will miss his glorious smile. Although we will never understand why he was taken, we will hopefully meet him again. My words are inadequate, my prayers with you.

i will miss tj alot. although we didnt really get to hang out much as adults, we had a lot of great times together as kids. tj was a good hearted kid, you raised him well and you should be very proud of him and all of his accomplishments. its still shocking, but we will all get through this and he will always remain in our hearts. i will admit it has been hard being here in montana and not being able to hang out with tj, but i know he is here in spirit watching over all of us, being the protective lovable teddy bear that he was. when i told keanna, she didnt know tj by name she just knew him as a teddy bear. love u guys, please take care and keep in touch. love robyn

I’m way over in Australia. It always makes me sad when a young person is taken. I tell you what there are so many great people in heaven. Our thoughts are with all his family and friends. Even though a person doesn’t always now another human you can still care. I am a nurse apart from breeding cattle. I have seen the sadness at the loss of many young people. RIP

    Mark and Donna,
As I reflect back on my time with TJ I was remembering that he always greeted me with a “hi” or “hello”. Loved his deep laugh and we will miss him helping with the Bump N Run. Brings tears to my eyes just knowing he isn’t with us in presence but will always be in our hearts to those who knew him.

I am so very sad to hear of TJs passing. I cannot fathom how you are feeling and can only send words that cant console you. TJ was a special man and certainly left a lasting impression. I spent only a short time with him but he was in my thoughts as my own son is. I was so very proud of him through your stories Donna. I have not seen many families that were so bonded as you two and TJ.
With great sadness and tears I send you hugs and prayers that God will take care of you. With love …..Linda Stevens.
