In Memory Of

Vaughn Shoulderblade, age 50, of Lame Deer

December 27, 1968 – September 27, 2019

Vaughn Thomas Shoulderblade, better known as Butt Butt by many, age 50, passed away on September 27, 2019, with family by his side. Vóhké’pa’o – Crooked Back, named after his Paternal Grandfather, Francis Shoulderblade. He was the son of the late Delpha Eaglefeathers and the late Dennis Shoulderblade, Sr. who grew up on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation being raised by Grandma Mamie as her own.  He would spend some summers with his grandparents Ivan and Pauline Small on the Packs the Hat Ranch in Lodge Grass.

Butt Butt attended school in Lame Deer and graduated from Colstrip High School with many sports accolades in Wrestling, Football and Track & Field. After high school Butt Butt went on to attend college at Dickinson State University on a football scholarship for the Blue Hawks.  He went on to attend the Boeing School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, OK, where he was in the top 2% in his class.  He held many types of jobs from a heavy equipment operator to a laborer to wildlands firefighter as well as a CDL driver.  He always knew how to find work to provide for his family.  Throughout his life he believed in the mantra of ‘work hard, play hard.’  Butt Butt was a man you don’t meet every day.  He was the epitome of a “standup guy” and while we are all sad because he has left us physically, he will live on in all of us through our memories, stories and how he impacted our lives.  His sisters Denise and Starla who named their sons after ButtButt (Demery Vaughn and Pius Vaughn) will carry on his name proudly.

Butt Butt was called back home by Ma’heo to be with his parents, maternal grandparents – Milton and Mamie Eaglefeathers, paternal grandparents – Claudia Shoulderblade, Ivan and Pauline Small. Aunts – Marietha, Milene, and Twila Eaglefeathers, and Uncle – Melbert ‘Moke’ Eaglefeathers and Tony Foote.  Sisters – Denise Shoulderblade, Delpha Eaglefeathers, Brother Dean S. and the mother of his daughters Rainie Foote.

He is survived by his daughters – Sutherland and Waverlee Shoulderblade.  Special Grandson – Marsean Hiwalker.  Sisters – Stacie Joiner, Shanon Shoulderblade, Tyra, Michele, Shandi Eaglefeathers, Tami Ontiveros, Lari Beartusk, Starla Shoulderblade. Brothers – Jarvis and Dennis Shoulderblade, Jr., Todd Roundstone, Duane, Dana, Shawn, Mychal, Moke Eaglefeathers, Cheyenne Hendrickson, Dornie, Jr., Randy, Brandy Americanhorse.  Aunts – Mildred Eaglefeathers, Mary and Tiny Shoulderblade and Rhoda Glenmore.  Uncle – Eugene Fisher and Don (Ruthie) Shoulderblade, Paternal uncles, Simon (Mary), Ivan Jr (Lucille), Blaine (Beldean), John (Francine), Henry (Sarah) Small. Paternal aunts, Ruby (John) Hart, Veronica (Sid) Eastman and the Clara Rock family. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.  In this time of grief, we may have forgotten to mention family and friends as Butt Butt comes from an extensive family.  We take this time to apologize if we have.

First time I met Butt Butt was at basketball practice freshman year, he was clowning around during layup drill and I thought who the hell is this guy! Turns out that guy was one of my best friends all through high school. Vaughn was a helluva an athlete and a great teammate. Playing football together and watching him become a state championship wrestler were some of my best memories from those school days, plus a few parties I vaguely remember, lol! Rest in Peace my friend, you will be missed.

I am sad to learn of Butt Butt’s death. He was a friend of our son in high school and was always friendly, polite and respectful around us. He had a great smile and always seemed to grinning and laughing, except in sports where he was a fierce and exceptional athlete. The last time I saw him was at our yard sale when we were preparing to leave Colstrip. He came up to me smiling and asked me if I remembered him—as if you could ever forget Butt Butt. Sympathy to his loved ones and rest in peace Vaughn

I played high school football against Vaughn. He was one of the strongest people I ever met. In later years I had the privilege of meeting him and getting to know him. He was a standup guy and a gentle giant. He will be missed in this world.
