Velma Emma Mann, age 99, of Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly of Broadus, Montana, passed away on December 20, 2006 in Las Vegas.

Velma was born August 7, 1907 at Miles City, Montana, the daughter of Ernest William and Angelina Kathryn (Schumacher) Preston. She lived and ranched in the Broadus area for many years. In 1925, Velma married Francis Claude Osgood. Two sons were born to this union, William Robert in 1940 and Francis Kenneth in 1945. During the 1930s they had to sell their livestock to the government and deliver them to the railroad. She helped Francis and neighbors trail the cattle to Gillette, Wyoming. They ranched on the Powder River until 1945 when Francis passed away. Velma later married Orval Mann. They purchased a ranch near Miles City, Montana, but later moved back to the Broadus area. Orval passed away in 1983 and Velma moved to Rapid City, South Dakota to be near her son, Bill and his wife Lillian and their family. Her son, Francis, was stationed overseas. Although she was afraid to fly, she visited Francis and his wife Julia in Hawaii, American Samora, and Guam. He returned to the states; and after her son, Bill passed away, Velma resided with Francis and his family in Las Vegas.

Velma loved horses, sheep and the outdoors. Her garden, yard and house were always filled with beautiful flowers. She was a wonderful cook and friends and relatives were always welcome. She especially enjoyed her ten grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Velma was always fine and never complained.

Velma is survived by her son Francis Osgood and his wife Julia, of Las Vegas, NV, a brother, Kenneth Preston of Miles City, MT, two sisters, Marjorie Hall and Mary Schaffer of Broadus, MT, her grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Bill, a granddaughter Trinnie, her parents, four brothers; Acie, George, Tom and Ernest, and five sisters; Alma, Elsie, Hallie, Ruby and Esther.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 28th at 1:00 p.m. at the Powder River Congregational Church in Broadus. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Valley View Cemetery.
