Velma Norman, age 87 of Miles City, Montana, passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2006 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Velma was born on February 21, 1919 in Mobridge, South Dakota, the daughter of Henry and Bertha (Kaiser) Mauck. She attended schools in Mobridge, graduating from Mobridge High School in 1937. After graduation, Velma and her sister Frieda moved to Miles City, Montana to look for work and were nicknamed The Gold Dust Twins. They found work at the Olive as waitresses. Velma married Buster Norman on March 30, 1946, in Miles City, Montana. They lived at Powderville and then on the Twelve Mile Ranch until 1961, when Buster was in a ranching accident which left him paralyzed. They then moved into Miles City and Velma dedicated her time to taking care of him.
Velma enjoyed cooking and was famous for her party mix. She was extremely crafty and loved to sew, garden and decorate her home, and also loved to play bingo and square dance. She was a second mother to Mike, Tater, Spud and Diane Patch. She always made sure they were dressed up for special occasions, purchasing suits and dresses for them. She was very generous and a provider for many. In her later years she became very involved with her great nieces and nephews and their numerous activities.
Velma was preceded in death by her husband Buster in 1963, her parents, three brothers, Tom, Eddie, and Henry, four sisters; Lydia, Pauline, Frieda and Eleanor, a great nephew, Brandon Patch, and by her best friend and fellow trouble maker, Mary Bailey.
She is survived by a niece Diane Money and her husband Mike of Bozeman, MT, three nephews; Mike Patch and his wife Nancy and Spud Patch and his wife Debbie all of Miles City, and Tater Patch of Billings, a sister Ernestine Roach of Idaho, a great niece Katie Patch of Billings, MT, and two great nephews, Brady Patch of Billings, MT and Jason Patch of Miles City, MT.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 4, 2006 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 5, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Custer County Cemetery.
