Vera Archer passed away Thursday morning, June 9, 2011, at the age of 92 at the Powder River Manor in Broadus, MT.Vera Eliza Benge Archer was born September 15, 1918 at the farm home of her parents David and Flossie (Bird) Benge on the Coalwood Divide. She was the second oldest of four children and helped her mother raise her younger brothers after her fathers death when she was only 9 years old. She attended grade school at the Divide School near her home. She graduated from Custer County High School in Miles City.
Vera and Robert Archer were married on September 20, 1941 at her family ranch at Coalwood. She and Bob were involved side by side in farming and ranching all their lives. Her family was a very important part of her life. Vera especially enjoyed her chickens. She was always involved in Coalwood Ladies Aid. She was a leader in 4-H throughout her children's achievements. Vera was a member of the Coalwood Community Church and a member of the Congregational Church (UCC) of Broadus after they moved down to the Olive area.
Her survivors include two sons, Walter (ArLynn) and Gordon (Deb), both of Olive; two daughters, Ione (Don) and Elaine (Ed) both of Olive; grandchildren, Dave (Dawn) Archer of Bismarck, ND, Renee Higgins of Olive, Nikole Cook (Ben) of Billings, Eric (Krista) Gotfredson of Olive, Aaron (Angie) Gotfredson of Ashland, Tami (Dan) Jenkins of Ennis, Melissa (Waylon) Billing of Olive, Lindsey (Shane) Johnson of Whitehall; twenty-one great grandchildren; and one brother, Milton (Hughette) Benge of Miles City.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, infant child, one great-grandson, and two brothers.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 12, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Broadus, with Rev. Karalee Mulkey officiating.
