In Memory Of

Verlin Miller, age 62, of Miles City.

September 9, 1957 – November 25, 2019

Verlin William Miller, age 62, died peacefully on Monday, November 25, 2019 in hospice care surrounded by family and friends at Holy Rosary. Verlin fought a long seven-year battle with cancer with strength, dignity, and was an inspiration to all.

Verlin was born on September 9, 1957 the fourth child of Elliot & Ella “Tootie” Miller. He grew up at the family farm in Angela and attended grade school at Rock Springs School. He then
boarded with the Lund and Neuhardt families as he attended high school at CCDHS. After graduating high school in 1975, he attended MSU Bozeman. There he received his Ag Teaching degree in 1979.  While at MSU he was a state FFA officer, 4th Vice President from 1975-1976.

After graduating from college, he returned home to ranch and to help family. He held various jobs including bartending at the Alta Club, owning a home delivery milk service “Miller’s
Doorstop Dairy”, drove the Wibaux mail route and worked on the farm crew at Fort Keogh. But his true passion was his 17 years of teaching Ag Classes at Joliet, Rosebud, and Miles City.

He met the love of his life, Bernadette Flemming, in 1985 and were married on October 9, 1992. They enjoyed making various goodies for the farmers market, the many FFA activities, card playing and loved being on the go most days.

Verlin was a strong inspiration to everyone. He was very loyal to his family, friends, and his faith. His love for his students went way beyond the classroom. He was there any time with a bit of advice to help them find a solution. Bernadette and Verlin had no children but gained many throughout his teaching career.

Verlin’s family would like to thank all of the wonderful caregivers at Holy Rosary Healthcare, and anyone else who helped make his final days peaceful. The family would also like to thank all those who prayed for Verlin and Bernadette during his illness.

Verlin is survived by his wife, Bernadette and a brother Gale Miller. Sister in-laws, Helen Jaques, Gay Miller, Rhonda Meritt, and Nicole Flemming. Brother in-laws Vaughn Flemming and Mark Peenstra. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins.

Verlin was preceded in death by his parents, Elliot & Ella “Tootie” Miller, infant brother Boyd, sister Raella Allen, brother Ross Miller and mother in-law Alice Flemming.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m.  A prayer service will follow at 6:00 p.m.  Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 2, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miles City.  Interment will follow in the family lot of the Custer County Cemetery.  Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting:  www.stevensonadsons.com.

Memorials can be made in Verlin’s name to Wake Up and Lace Up, Miles City FFA, Holy Rosary Hospital, or Sacred Heart School Adopt a Student Program.

I knew Mr. Miller really well when he was a substitute teacher for the schools. For a while he would bring in various drawings he did to the middle school, and was always happy to see mine. There was a period of time when he was the welding teacher where he would let me come in to burn things for my art projects and was always very kind to every student. I am very sad to hear about his passing, he was a great man to many children.

I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Miller in my FFA years of high school. He was a great teacher to not only his FFA students but to the entire state. I was running for State FFA one year and we nicknamed him the angel of death as he always had a smile on his face as he walked us into the next round of interviews. He also still remembered me after that year and always took the time to talk. I hope he is now a smiling angel looking over his family. RIP Mr. Miller

I’m one of Verlin’s former students. It really surprised how much he could tolerate misbehaved 17 and 18 years olds in the advanced welding class at CCDHS.
I’m going to miss the guy. He was always super nice to everyone despite all the stuff he had to put up with sometimes.
Even outside of school, I often saw Verlin around town and he would always say hi to me with a smile.
A lot of people around Miles City are going to miss this kind soul.

Bernadette, I am so sorry to find Verlin has passed. You both are wonderful people, and he will be missed by many. He astonished me by how well he always remembered a face. I hadn’t seen either one of you after you were married until at least 15 years later at Rosebud High School cafeteria during a basketball tournament, and sure enough, he remembered me. You both know how to make everyone around you feel like family. He will be missed. May God’s grace comfort you in these hard times.

Sweet Bernadette, I am so sad but so thankful to know that he is in a better place. One day you will be reunited. I loved him so much as did so many people. He was always so kind to me and would just start up a chatter when he saw me. I just saw him not too long ago, and he asked how I was doing with my jams and jellies!!! He just made a person feel like they were important. I’m so sorry for your loss and I pray that you will find peace through this time of grieving. I pray that God will surround you with His amazing love and comfort you. I will miss the visits with him and I just know he is watching from above because he loved so many and gave selflessly of himself. He was a strong individual for sure!! Hugs to you sweet Bernadette.

    Dear Bernadette and Family:
Absolutely shocked to discover the news of Verlin’s passing! My brother Richard (Lynn) Danklefsen, who passed away in mid-February of this year, was Verlin’s cousin, as you all well know. My mother, Jean Egge Danklefsen Fretland, was married to Lynn’s father, Ray Danklefsen, for several years in the 1940’s. Such a surprise to hear that he was extremely ill from cancer. He was a wonderful man with a huge heart! HE will be greatly missed. Keep my sister Medora Burgess in your prayers. She lost her husband, Jack to diabetic complications, five days after Lynn passed away.
