Viola Meidinger, age 93, of Miles City, passed away on Monday, July 24, 2017 at Holy Rosary Extended Care after 7 years of kind & loving care.
Viola was born on April 28, 1924 at the family farm near Snow, ND, the fifth of seventeen children born to George and Pearl (Prociv) Pasicznyk. She attended grade school until a double bout with Mumps caused her to lose a lot of her hearing and cut short her education. She worked hard on the farm for several years, helping her mother with her many siblings, as well as feeding the animals, shocking grain, hoeing weeds and whatever else was necessary to help keep the farm going. At the age of 21, when the youngest child was 8 months old and there were still 9 children living in the little sod house, their mother passed away of liver cancer. Being the oldest still at home, Viola took over as the mother of the house, and with the help of her younger sisters, helped raise the little boys.
Two years later, Viola went to Kinsey, Montana to help her older sister with their young children. While there, she got acquainted with a soldier that had just returned from WWII named Elmer Meidinger, her sister’s brother-in-law.
Viola married Elmer on November 4, 1947 and settled down at the 1st pump house at Kinsey, where they began their own family of five girls’ and one boy. Viola was very shy for many years because of her hearing loss, so Elmer bought her first hearing aide. Viola loved to cook and she and Elmer hosted a number of Thanksgiving dinners and 4th of July celebrations for family and friends. Viola also loved her flowers, especially her Africa Violet’s and putting up the bounty from the garden.
Viola is survived by her children, Donna (Les) Hirsch-Moon Creek, Dolores Willson-Miles City, Carol (Tom) Winchell-Glendive, Cindy (Garth) Anderson-Champaign, IL, and Chris (Andrea) Meidinger-Miles City, and Son-in-law, Walter Malone-Gilbert, AZ. Also, surviving are 15 grandchildren & 2 step grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren with one on the way, & 1 step great-grandchild; 3 sisters, 4 brothers & several in-laws.
Viola was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Elmer Meidinger, daughter, Darlene Malone, son-in-law Rick Willson, her parents, 6 brothers, 3 sisters and several in-laws.
