Viola Young, age 95, of Miles City passed away on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at Holy Rosary Healthcare in Miles City.
Vi was born on October 2, 1926 in Ochre River, Manitoba, Canada to Walter and Caledonia (Walker) Rollinson. She and her six siblings attended the small country school, Hamilton, through the 6th grade and then had to go to Ochre River to finish their schooling. Vi left home and moved to Regina, Saskatchewan where she worked in retail sales. She advanced to the position of Department Manager of women’s clothing at the Simpson’s Store. She and a friend decided to travel to the United States and stopped in Terry, Montana where she met and fell in love with Alvin Young. They were married on December 31, 1956. Following their marriage, they moved to the family ranch at Locate, where they remained until the sale of the ranch in 1977. From this union there were three girls: Gloria, Dawn and Lesa. While on the ranch, Vi was an avid gardener, seamstress, legendary cook and loved to crochet and knit. She was active in the Locate-Knowlton Home Demonstration Club. Upon the sale of the ranch, Alvin and Vi purchased the Alzada Bar & Café in Alzada, Montana where Vi’s cooking became legendary far and wide. In 1992, they sold the Bar and Café and returned to Miles City to retire.
Upon retirement, Vi spent her time cooking for family dinners, painting, tending her flower beds, taking vacations, spending every available moment with her grandchildren and later her great grandchildren attending their sports events and school programs, participating in parades with her 1967 convertible Cadillac, playing cards with various friends and going dancing. Vi had a love of life and a ready smile and kind word for all who knew her.
Vi was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Caledonia, husband Alvin, brothers: Luther, Charles and Eulis; sisters: Nora, Bertha and Gertrude and her daughter Gloria. She is survived by her daughters: Dawn Ludwig and Lesa (Jack Lynch) Young; grandchildren: Tammy (Mike) Wajer, Wendy (Robert) Schenk, Megan (Levi) Gordon, Erin & Ty Kampen, Vanessa (James) Barkell, Chayce (Frieda Lehn) Goton, Hayden (Davonne Humphreys) Goton; great grandchildren: Carley Schenk, Cody Schenk, Kimber Gordon, Hayes Gordon, and Rhianna Barkell and too many nieces and nephews to count.

I remember as a young child going to the ranch and staying with Uncle Alvin and Aunt Vi. Such fond memories. Vi was always so soft spoken and gracious. RIP to a class act.

I knew Vi through the Locate-Knowlton Homemakers club and for many years enjoyed her wry humorous comments and caring comments. She was definitely a strong country woman with a great sense of style. I have missed her since her health became too poor to attend. Our condolences to her family from the Ostendorf family- Rosalie, Mark and Christina Ostendorf and kids

What a fun & classy lady. I so enjoyed Homemaker’s club with her and just awhile ago in Plevna. Vi and her family had come for
basketball games & supper at the Plevna Bar… all nine of them in her white limo!! What a special visit with her. Blessings & special memories for her family,
Marilyn & Jim May

I remember the entire Locate community (such that it was) being completely dazzled by the petite vivacious blonde that Al brought to the Powder River. Vi definitely perked things up, and was a real asset!

To Aunt Vi’s family. So very sorry to hear of your Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma’s passing. She was the last remaining member of my Mom’s family. I have lots of fond memories of her trips to Canada. I’ve thought about her quite a bit over the last few years wondering how she was doing. May she rest in peace. She will be missed.

Oh Vi,
Knowing Vi from the Locate Knowlton Homemakers group I can recount many occasions that Vi attended. Always classy and a little sassy. Sweetest lady ever. Thoughts for your family.
John Munsell says
I met Vi & Al when they had the Alzada cafe, and they purchased meat at my plant. It was always a treat to see them, and an especial treat eating at their cafe. They were both so cordial, friendly, and accomodating. Vi was a glitsy lady, full of zest, and she treated us like we had always been life-long friends. A never-ending smile, and a desire to chat about anything. Oh, if only the world were full of folks like Vi & Al.
Lori Williams says
