In Memory Of

Virginia Samuelson, age 90, of Broadus.

February 12, 1930 – October 16, 2020

Virginia E. Samuelson, age 90, of Broadus passed away at The Powder River Manor Nursing Home in Broadus, MT. She was delivered by her grandmother on February 12, 1930 in Eagle Butte, South Dakota. Her parents were Otis (Beanie) and Alice Olsen Shannon.

She started country school south of Eagle Butte for one year and later moved to Dupree, South Dakota and attended grade school and high school there. Virginia worked for Jim Larsen waiting tables, ironed clothes for ladies and also baby-sat kids around the town.

She first met Voyle when she was waitressing and he put a penny in his water glass as a tip… she was not pleased! In 1948, she married the love of her life, Voyle Samuelson. They lived together at Little Ireland for eleven years. All five of their kids were born in South Dakota: Carl, Sherry, Sidney, Norman, and Donald. Later on, in 1959 they bought a place on Pumpkin Creek, west of Broadus. They started attending the basketball games at the Broadus schools and always enjoyed watching their kids, grandkids and now great grandkids play. We have a fifth son Lynn Bostwick.  He was a good friend of Sid’s so was at our place a lot during high school so is part of our family.

She was actively involved in her church, teaching Sunday School and Bible School. She was also a member of Cowbelles and served in different positions, a member of the Rolling Hills Golf Course and was pleased when they chose her idea for the name for the golf course. She loved her Tuesday morning golf with her friends. She also enjoyed bowling and cooking. Virginia was well known for her molasses raisin bread she made for the family!

Many didn’t know that she barrel raced she was particularly happy when her ranch pony beat the Texan’s and their high powered horses. Virginia’s life revolved around Voyle, her family and the ranch.

She is survived by her sons, Sid (Gaye), Norman (Julie); Donald (Patty); daughter-in-law, Melanie, son-in-law, Dick Gaskill; a brother Robert (Kim) Shannon; sister-in-law, Betty Shannon; 16 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren and several special nieces and nephews.

Virginia is preceded in death by her husband, Voyle; daughter, Sherry; son, Carl; siblings, Audrey (Wayne), Stella (Wayne), Norman (Vonnie), Phillip, and Roy Shannon.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2020 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus.  Private family services will be held on Friday, October 30, 2020.  Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting:  www.stevensonanndsons.com.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Saviors Lutheran Church or Golf For Life.

The family would like to thank the nursing home staff for the wonderful care they provided to Virginia.

She was always there for whomever needed her, but when she lost her daughter, Sherry, and then her son, Carl, it rocked her to the soul, but she stayed strong in her faith. I’m sure she rolled her eyes many times but she never let me know! They both hugged me when I was in pain and high fives me when I actually hit the ball right. Thank you Virginia for teaching me what kindness was. God bless you dear lady, fly long and high 💜
