In Memory Of

Virginia “Snooks” Murnion, age 86, of Jordan.

August 2, 1934 – June 19, 2021

Virginia Lou “Snooks” Murnion, age 86, of Jordan, Montana went to meet her Lord on June 19th, 2021 from her earthly home.

She was born August 2nd, 1934 in Buffalo, Wyoming to Ada and A.R. “Slim” Hays.  The family moved to Jordan, Montana in 1941.  They moved in at night and she was very disappointed to wake up in the morning and not see the mountains.  Snooks loved riding her little black horse Cricket around the Missouri Breaks and had a special love for Cow Camp.  She made her first communion in 1942 and was confirmed in 1948 at St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Church in Jordan. When she was 12 years old, she was joined by her best friend and sister Linda.  Snooks graduated from Garfield County High School in 1952, the same school that Coleman and all their children graduated from.  On August 4th, 1952 she married Coleman Murnion, following their wedding they lived in a sheep wagon.  They farmed and ranched on the Woody Creek of Haxby Point for a number of years, they then moved to Brusett for a short time before finally moving to the family home.  Snooks had an open-door policy, whether it was a meal, a visit or a bed that was needed, everyone was welcome in her home.  She was known around the community for her famous dinner rolls.  Snooks enjoyed traveling; whether it was a day trip with her sons, a visit to the girls, or her pilgrimages to Mexico and Lourdes.  She was very devoted to her faith and to the rosary.

Snooks is survived by her children: Gerald (Lori) Murnion of Jordan, Rosanne (Dean) Curran of Cordova, AK, Mary Murnion of Jordan, Dixon (Becky) Murnion of Sand Springs, MT, Zane (Britt) Murnion of Jordan, MT, Jenny (John) Frady of Jordan, MT, Fred (Shauna) Murnion of Cohagen, MT, Vince (Lana) Murnion of Winnett, MT, Sam (Tara) Murnion of Winnett, MT, Lee (Toni) Murnion of Jordan, MT, Lucy Peterson of Biloxi, MS, Jesse Murnion of Jordan, MT, Abe (Shanna) Murnion of Jordan, MT, Ben (Natalie) Murnion of Jordan, MT, and Leo (Valerie) Murnion of Jordan, MT, as well as a sister Linda (Jim) Peters of Belfry, MT. She loved and adored everyone of her 66 grandchildren and 51 great grandchildren.  Her granddaughter Nicole lived with her for 6 years.  Snooks was immensely proud of having over 100 direct descendants.  She is preceded in death by her husband Coleman, her parents Slim and Ada, her son Charles Murnion, a grandson Joshua, and a great granddaughter Maria Rose.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 22, 2021 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Church followed by a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at the Garfield High School Gym.  Rite of Committal will follow in the Pioneer Cemetery.  Condolences may be made to the family by visiting:  www.stevensonandsons.com.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to EWTN or St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Church in her name.

Things got really grim at times, but there was always something good that come out of it. I do not know anyone that I admired more than Coleman and Snooks. They always took time to visit.

One occasion she was telling me of her life as a child in school and all the children watching for the planes to fly over the school during the war. They were the “watch dogs” for the planes. Cherish her wonderful memories. She was quite the lady.

Lots of memories of Snooks when she would visit her parents on their place near Belfry; and then more recent visits with her in Miles City. I will always remember Snooks as a kind person and very devoted to family. She certainly set an example for her family and the rest of us. Thinking of Linda, Rosanne, and all of Snooks’ family during this difficult time.

    June 23, 2021 at 8:43 am

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let the perpetual light shine upon her. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Over the course of my time in Jordan I had many interactions with Snooks and her family. From baptisms to weddings to funerals, she was always a strong force in her family. Her faith was outstanding. Every Friday she would stop by the church to make the Stations of the Cross. During Lent she stopped every day.

Even in the midst of tragedy, she tried to have a positive attitude knowing that God was with her. I will miss the conversations we had when I would make it back to Jordan to visit. There are too many stories to share. Prayers for her family as they bury their matriarch today.
