Robert “Wayne” Higgins, age 89, of Miles City passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2020 at the Holy Rosary Hospital.
Wayne was born on July 31, 1931, the son of Frank and Vivian (Frilick) Higgins in San Diego, CA. He grew up and attended schools in La Mesa and Grossmont, California. He attended two years at Polytechnic College in CA studying engineering.
Wayne was a truck driver in 11 different states before entering the Army in July of 1952. He served in Korea in the Army and was honorably discharged in June of 1954. He went to Indonesia for a couple years and worked highway construction in the jungle. He also went to Saudi Arabia for 2 ½ years and worked moving heavy equipment in the oil refineries. Staying adventurous, he worked in Hawaii as a welder for a short time. He bought a boat and sailed around the world and ended back in California. He then came to Miles City where he met and married Marilyn Wheadon on July 31, 1997. He worked for Oftedal Construction and was employed by the Department of Transportation as an engineer before retiring.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, one son, Larry Staub of Carmel CA, one daughter, Jan McDonnell of Sacramento, CA, a step-daughter Michelle Wheadon-Kinnunen of Miles City, and one step-son, Shawn Wheadon -Gartside of Billings, MT, two granddaughters Jamie and Jessie Kinnunen of Miles City. He was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria Bell.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, October 16, 2020 at 1 p.m. at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City with interment to follow at the Eastern Montana Vets Cemetery.
