In Memory Of

Weaver Hiwalker

Wake: Sunday, October 26, 2008 starting at 6:00pm and continuing all night at the Hi Walking log house, 4 miles west of Lame Deer.

Funeral Service: Monday, October 27, 2008 at 11:00am at the Allen Rowland Gymnasium.

Interment will follow at the family ranch north of Lame Deer.

Weaver Douglas Hiwalker, Indian name Netse Ohvehoneveste (Eagle Chief), age 66 passed away at Parkview Care Center on October 21, 2008 after a lengthy illness.

Weaver was born in Lame Deer on Oct. 3, 1942 to George and Helen (Kinzel) Hiwalker. He was raised by his grandparents, Floyd and Belle High Walking. He attended elementary school in Lame Deer and graduated from Colstrip High School.He was a tribal police officer before enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1966. He served a tour in Viet Nam, and was honorably discharged from the Service in January of 1968. He returned to Lame Deer and was a lieutenant on the police force, later becoming captain. He then became a criminal investigator for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. After retiring from the BIA, Weaver worked at Fort Howe and later for Western Energy in Colstrip. He held several different positions, but was operating a coal hauler when he retired in 2005.Weaver married Kim Green in 1968. They later divorced.

He is survived by Kim, daughter Rita Betancourt-Villa (Arnifo), grandson Julian Solis-Hiwalker, sisters Rose LaFranier (Roy) of Lame Deer and Virginia Ferris of Ft. Washakie, WY, brother Floyd Hiwalker of Lame Deer; adopted sister Addie Baker and adopted brother Nathaniel Littlebird; aunts Cecelia Limberhand, Cyrilla Bearchum and Martha LaRance, uncles Oscar Kinzel and Donlin Many Bad Horses; special cousins, Max and Dolly Hiwalker, Myrna Rochelle, George Scalpcane and Zethel Woodenlegs; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by grandparents Floyd and Belle (Teeth) High Walking, Jerry and Alice (Harris) Kinzel, parents George and Helen Hiwalker, brothers George Jr., Cleveland and Hank and sister Pat Hossner.

Weaver was a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the Kit Fox Society. He was given the Indian name Little Wolf by William Redcherries. At a victory dance held on Weavers return from Viet Nam, Teddy Gray gave Weaver the name Eagle Chief. Weavers family gives special thanks to Nurse Irene Ricker and C.N.A. Sam Walker for their care of Weaver.
