On December 16, 2001, Weston James Small (Wi’ Cah’ pi Waci’ Hoksila – Dances to the Stars), entered this world in Pine Ridge, SD to David Small and Deanna Harris. Even as a baby Weston carried a calmness and humbleness about him that he carried with him throughout his entire life.
Weston “Sonny” James attended various schools throughout his Elementary, Middle School, and High School years. He was one of two students to be promoted from 8th grade at Birney Day School. He played basketball and football growing up, always playing just for the love of the sport/game. Weston was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, just cruising the backroads, and enjoying the peacefulness that nature brought. He also had a love for animals, owning cats, dogs, and Shetlands. The patience that Weston had in life showed through the love and care he had for his animals. Weston was a very kind, humble, simple man; never wanting or asking for a lot. You would never know until after meeting and getting to know him how much he loved to laugh and make people smile. There was never a dull moment being around Wes, especially with his quirky comebacks and always having a funny movie reference quote. Weston had a very close bond with all his siblings. If you were to see him out in public it was almost certain he would be with one or more of his siblings. Although he didn’t have children of his own, he had a special connection and love with each one of his nieces and nephews, as if they were his own children. Weston loved both of his parents so much, the relationship he had with each of them was unwavering and timeless. He had his sights set high on bettering his life for his family and himself. He recently applied for and was accepted into the auto mechanics program in Anaconda and was set to leave in October. Weston was carving a path to a better future for himself.
Weston is proceeded in death by his Unci Grace Little Crow, whom he was very close to; his grandfather’s Bryan Harris Jr, Clinton Small, & Davey Archambeau III. His uncle Larry Red Cloud. His cousins Tyrel Fraser, Lola Pickett, Clinton Ross Jr, & Ashton Redcloud. His special friend Saul Blackweasel.
Weston is survived by his parents David Small & Deanna Harris; his paternal grandmother Jacklyn Bighorn-Small; his siblings Dave T. Spang, Andrea Spang, Maria Harris, Mario Harris, Bryan Harris III, McKenzie Archambeau, Tyler Small & Dallie Tye Archambeau; his nieces and nephews Gracelyn, Davey, Silas, Arabella, Reigan, Aria, Oakley, Handsome, Kashmere & Gracie Ann. Maternal aunts Brenda Harris, Kimberly Littlehawk, Sharon Haugen, Lucy Simpson, Zona Whitewoman, Simone Littlehawk & Verlene Fox. Maternal uncle Roger Yellowboy. Paternal aunts Maebelle Archambeau, Davetta Archambeau, Bonnie Archambeau, Sheryl Lawrence, Sharon Small & Shelly Small. Paternal uncle Robert Simpson. Also numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and adopted family, especially his VOA family, uncle Rudy Escimilla Ten fingers, aunt Reba Goodlow, The Cante Teza Star Nation (Land of the Strong Hearts) Family, and BJ Peterson & Family.
Weston comes from a very large family, including The Smalls, The Harris’, The Haugens, The Curleys, The Wolfblacks, The Kinzels, The Briens, The Tallwhitemans, The Little Crows, The Bighorns, The Weinbergers, The Archambeaus, The Atkinsons, The Andersons, The Whitewomans, The Littlehawks, The Dullknifes & The Simpsons. Please forgive us in our time of mourning if we forgot to mention anyone.
A special thank you to Ashley Lawrence & Aaron Shane, Adam Zimmer, Miles Dennis, Taylor Dennis, Annie Wilson and the Ashland Search & Rescue for helping bring Weston back to his family. Also thank you to Jeremy Hiwalker, Pascal Shoulderblade, Bryce Lonewolf, Uncle Robert Simpson and the Bull Creek Singers.

Saddens me to hear of the loss of young ones. I didn’t know him but he sounds like he was going down the right path with plans for school and all. May God be with him and your family.
