Winifred Ruth Winnie James, age 89, of Miles City passed away on Monday, March 30, 2009 at her home at the Holy Rosary Extended Care.

Winnie was born on January 19, 1920 in Great Falls, Montana, the daughter of Esther and John Wulf of Froid, Montana. After graduating from Froid Public School, she married Svend Bertelsen with whom she had three children. They later divorced. While in Froid, she enjoyed her job as cook at the school for 10 years. In 1962, she attended Junes Beauty School in Miles City and worked well into her 70s as a beautician.

Winnie loved baking for others, playing piano for church services and other community activities, sewing, crafts, playing games and cards, and swimming. But most of all, she enjoyed visiting with her family and friends.

Winnie was preceded in death by her parents, her infant son, Ronald Bertelsen, husband Elmo James, infant sister, Priscilla, sisters: Marcy White and Joan Knudtson; and a brother, Fritz Wulf. She is survived by her son, Roger (Debra) Bertelsen of Froid, MT; daughter, Janis (Jerry) Meidinger of Miles City, MT; Sisters: Beverly Knick of Plentywood, MT; Roma Portra of Killdeer, ND; Meredith Holgersen of Forsyth, MT; brothers: Homer (Lanie) Wulf of Columbia Falls, MT and Gordon (Luann) Wulf of Red Bluff, CA; eight grandchildren: Charmaine (Randy) Reidel, Nathan (Pam) Bertelsen, Brandon Bertelsen, Sheila (Kevin) Krausz, Summer (Jim) Gappa, Karina (Kory) Lahue, Jennie (Lance) Davidson and Scott (Melinda) Paquin; seventeen great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 3, 2009 at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will be held in the Froid Cemetery in Froid, Montana.
