Staff Sergeant Zack Smith, age 23, of Miles City, died Monday, September 20, 2004, at Saint Vincent's Hospital in Billings, MT.
Mom and Dad Smith received the glorious gift of Zack on March 10, 1981, in Melbourne, FL. Soon after, the Smith family moved back to Mom's hometown of Miles City. The family lived in Miles City until 1987 when they packed up and moved to the Seattle area of Washington. During the seven year stay in Washington Zack developed many interests; baseball became a family favorite... even Mom could swing a powerful stick. Zack intensified his love for Miles City through frequent trips to visit his Grandparents and Uncle Roy who would always take him fishing, hunting, and shooting which Zack grew to love so very much.
To Zack's delight, the Smith family moved back to Miles City in 1993. Ice hockey skated its way into Zack's heart as he played the sport throughout his high school career. He attended Custer County District High School and somehow found a passion for auto mechanics. Needless to say his favorite class was auto shop. In 1999, upon graduation from CCDHS, Zack enlisted in the United States Air Force and excelled as a Aircraft Ground Equipment Mechanic.
During the period of his enlistment he served in many foreign lands which include Kuwait, Israel, The Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, England, and various other parts of Europe. Zack was in the Air Force for over five and a half years and was soon to be discharged to come home to his beautiful fiance whom he had stumbled upon not even a year ago while on leave in Miles City. They found the ultimate LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT for one another. They were to be married this twentieth of November until this tragedy changed all of his plans. Zack in his all too short journey into and out of this life was so many things. Zack was outstanding in everything he did, but where he truly excelled was in the giving of himself. To us who knew him best he was the truest friend, loyal to the end. Zack was the greatest brother anyone could've been blessed with. He was the son any parent would cry with tears of pride and joy to be able to have the privilege of raising. He truly was a fine young man and would've grown to be an outstanding husband and father. Zack is leaving behind a growing legacy of lasting loved one's who adore him deeply and the fire of our love will never dim!!!
