Alec Theodore “Ted” Kiltie age 82 of Miles City passed away on Monday, October 24, 2022, at Holy Rosary Hospital in Miles City.
Ted was born in Miles City, Montana on August 18, 1940, the son of Thomas Alec Kiltie and Ethel Mae (Van Hoven) Kiltie. Ted grew up in Miles City and graduated from Custer County High School in 1958. Ted met the love of his life Virginia Rae “Ginger” Decker in 1961 and they married November 21, 1962, at the Presbyterian Church in Miles City. Ted and Ginger remained in Miles City where they made their home. To this union, two children were born, Kirk and Sandra. Ted began his work experience as a Western Union Telegram Messenger Boy, delivering messages throughout town on his bicycle. After he graduated high school, he worked at a lumber yard. After Ted and Ginger married, he enlisted in the Montana National Guard. When he returned from basic training Ted went to work at the Miles City Water Department and worked there for 42 years. Ted was a proud member of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), and held the position of President for several years.
Ted took pride in creating things with his hands from building his family a home to making birdhouses with his grandsons. Ted explained that Ginger was the thinker, and he was the builder, she came up with ideas and he figured out how to build them. Ted’s greatest joy was spending time with his grandsons Shane and Hunter and later with his great-grandchildren, Ryker, Kieran and Alec.
Ted is survived by his daughter Sandy and her husband Art Peaslee, four grandchildren, Desta Lynn Fix, Khristofer Alex Crandall, Shane Alec (Jenny) Kiltie and Keith Hunter (Stacey) Losing, three step-grandchildren Austin (Katie) Peaslee, Katelyn (Tony) Hoffman and Kendall Peaslee, his great-grandchildren Lillian, Connor, Ryker, Kieran and Luther Alec and step-great-grandchildren Parker, Charlee, Ruby and Bodie; and a brother-in-law Calvin (Cindy) Decker and his family. Ted was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ginger in 2013, son Kirk in 2006, and son-in-law Keith Losing in 1994.
Ted and Ginger’s ashes will be mingled, and the family will hold a private service at a later date.

It was a great honor to get to know Ted. I learned so much about Miles City history. He was a treasure, a wonderful man. I loved hearing all of the stories, about being a kid in MC and his adventures with his family and building his home. He will be missed immensely. Sandy and family I wish you deep peace in knowing he’s with Ginger now and together they are watching over all of you. Rest in Peace Ted.

I always enjoyed speaking with Ted. The wealth of knowledge that Ted had about Miles City was extraordinary. He was like the Norm of the break room when he stopped daily for a conversation with the guys. Always greeting everyone upon his arrival. My sympathy and condolences to the family.

Ted Kiltie also known and Teddy 2 times because he greeted the crew in the morning with a “howdy howdy”. Along with procuring him a nick name, it endeared the younger employees to the old wise man that told it like it was.
Coming out of collage as a young republican and running into Ted Kiltie, the avid unionist, changed my life forever. He was a team player and never thought of himself but always what was best for all his fellow union members as a group.
His stories and laughter still ring in my ear’s years later. Along with his dislike of the movie A Christmas Story. Among those that had the privilege to work with him he was pure and simple- a legend.
I can’t imagine not knowing Ted Kiltie. Rest in peace my friend and more importantly, my mentor.
In solidarity forever

Went all the way through grade school (Lincoln) Jr high then to high school with Ted. Teddy was a good gentle man who took care of his family. Before I left town he bought a rental property for his son from me i hope it worked out well for him. I always liked Ted and I want to express my sympathy to his family.
