Alfred Joseph Strange Owl, Jr., Ma’xehetane, Big Man, was called back to the next camp by Mahe’o on July 30, 2023. Known to everyone as Aljo.
Aljo was born April 22, 1951 in Ashland, MT to Alfred Strange Owl, Sr. and Theresa Two Bulls. He was raised by his grandma Grace Strange Owl at Birney Village. He attended boarding schools at St. Labre and Busby Tribal Schools. Graduating as salutatorian in 1970. Played basketball, ran cross country and track. Winning state titles. After high school he went on to college at Greely, Colorado. Past times included rodeo and fancy dancing at powwows, winning numerous contest.
He had numerous jobs including facility manager at the Northern Cheyenne Tribal School, Housing Authority and Northern Cheyenne Tribe, Served as a tribal council member for the Muddy district aka Muddy Crenshaw. Skills were in carpentry, electrical and construction.
Aljo was an avid sports fan to professional and local teams including the Colstrip Colts and Fillies, Denver Broncos, Kansas Jayhawks, North Carolina Tar Heels and the Oklahoma Sooners. Loved to watch his family and relatives compete.
Aljo married his life time love Christine Freeman on September 14, 1984. From this union they had two boys: Aljo (AJ) and Tommy Joe (TJ) Strange Owl. Raised two stepsons Ryan and Essence Kaline. His daughters Nico Strange Owl and Missy Black Eagle from Oklahoma.
Aljo was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents John and Gertrude Strange Owl, Grandfather David James Strange Owl, Grandmother Grace, Brothers: James, John, Alvin Lee and Rufus Sisters: Eva. Mother-in-law Bertha.
Aljo is survived by wife and children. Brothers: Joseph, Wayne, Melvin, Dayton and Frank. Sisters: Althea, Ann, Alfreda, Juanita, Rachel, Shasta, Deborah, Sylvia. Aunts: Eva Lee, Florence Running Wolf, Charlotte Rock Rocks and Ruthie Shoulderblade. Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He took Jeannie Strange Owl as his mother. The family of Blanch Smith Braine.
Relatives include Young Man Afraid of His Horse, Beartusks, Red Necks, Bents, Night Walkers, Standing Elks, Pines, Bellymules, Killsontops, and Two Bulls.

It is with a sad heart that I heard the passing of my good friend Aljo, while on a trip to Colorado Springs this week. My heart felt condolences go out to Christine and the family. Last time I saw you all was when we talked at this years 4th of July pow-wow one night. My prayers go out to each of you for your loss. Aljo, you will be remembered. We had such good fun when we were in colstrip bowling league together when we won Sunday night mixed league several years ago. Aljo, thank you for some great memories.
