Alice L. Pehl, age 87, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2018 in Terry, MT with family by her side.
Alice was born to Lawrence and Adele (Huseby) Youngquist on February 25, 1931 in Circle, MT. She was valedictorian of Circle High School, class of 1949. She graduated from Montana State College in 1954 with degrees in Home Economics and English Education and came to Terry to teach at Terry High School.
Alice married Charles Pehl on October 13, 1956. They built their home on Broadview Bench half a mile east of the Pehl home farm and raised their children there. In 1977, Alice renewed her teaching certificate and was appointed to fill the vacancy of County Superintendent of Schools in Prairie County. She was elected to that office for the next three terms and retired in 1990.
Alice was a long-time member of the Terry Wesleyan Church, serving as treasurer for many years. She loved playing her accordion and harmonica in church, and would even include a tambourine on her tapping toes occasionally. She had an inch long harmonica that she kept in her purse and she would amaze friends and family by playing the “Entertainer” on it. She was self-taught on many instruments including piano, organ, guitar, melodica, and banjo.
Alice served Terry and Prairie County in 4-H activities, homemakers clubs, and the Prairie Manor board. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years. She especially enjoyed her many years as a member of the Prairie County Museum board and helped to transcribe the Evelyn Cameron diaries.
Alice was known for her sense of humor. Charlie also had great humor, and together they filled their home with laughter and love. Family gatherings resonate with stories of the shenanigans that Alice and Charlie instigated.
Alice loved the outdoors. She was the hunter of the family and would bring home a deer most seasons. She also loved fishing and Stan, Lorna, and Glenn have many memories of placing set lines for catfish and sturgeon on the banks of Yellowstone. Alice also caught a few paddlefish at Intake, using spark plugs from the shop. Glenn had to grab her by the belt once to prevent her from getting dragged into the river by a 60 pound paddlefish.
After retiring as County Superintendent of Schools, Alice enjoyed many hours of summer fallowing. She didn’t garden, but driving the big tractor put a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. She entertained the grandkids with homemade kites, riding lawn mower races, and throwing confetti for birthday parties. Except once, it wasn’t confetti, it was potpourri.
Alice is survived by her oldest son Stan (Carol) Pehl of Portland, OR, daughter Lorna Pehl of Laramie and Torrington, WY, and youngest son Glenn (Molly) Pehl of Terry; Lorna’s children, grandson Quinn Hunter of Torrington, WY, and granddaughter Kylie Hunter of Cheyenne, WY; Glenn’s child, grandson Tate (Sara) Pehl of Terry, parents of great-grandson Tucker, and Stan and Carol’s children, Maryam (Aidan) Samuel-John and parents of great-granddaughter Lennon, and Ben Razavi.
Alice is also survived by her three siblings, Kenny Youngquist of Circle, Rodney (Ann) Youngquist of Canby, OR, and Marilyn Mittelstaedt of Stanwood, WA.

Stan, Lorna, and Glen and families, We send our sympathies in the loss of your mom. Alice was a good person. I remember what a hard worker she was when she and Charlie still farmed on Broadview. It was fun listening to her Charlie stories, always told with a chuckle. We were sorry that she suffered such poor health in the last few years. She’s free from pain now and flying with the angels. Take comfort in your memories and be strong in your faith.

I absolutely loved Alice Pehl. I was her hairdresser for years and always enjoyed my time with her. She could tell the best stories!!! Alice loved life and always had a great attitude about it even when she was hurting. She had a great mind, an amazing memory, a beautiful heart, and and a sense of humor like no other. I often felt like she would have been my best friend if we had grown up together. I visited her at the hospital many times and she was always in good spirits as she rubbed her stubbed knee, it said it didn’t hurt anymore. She sure seem to miss it though. ?
My heart is with the family now; she will be greatly missed.
