Betty Ann Barthelmess, age 86, of Miles City, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2015 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law surrounded by her family.
Betty Ann was born at the Darcy Hospital in Miles City, Montana on June 18, 1928, the daughter of Ira and Bessie (Trainer) Carey. She was educated at the Carey-Malone School and attended Custer County High School.
On October 18, 1946 she married Robert Garrison Barthelmess and they raised their five children while ranching in Powder River and Custer Counties. After moving to the Pine Hills, Betty Ann worked at clothing stores in Miles City while her children were attending High School. She and her husband, Bob, were appointed as Curators of the Range Riders Museum in 1980 and remained there until their retirement in April, 2011.
She was a member of the Betty Lamp Club, presently known as the Future Homemakers of America. She was a member of the Cowbelles and at one time held a State Office. She was an organizational leader of the Cloverleaf 4-H Club and remained a leader there for at least 15 years, a member and one time President of the Range Riders Reps, and a member of the Southeastern Montana Fiddlers for years where she played the piano.
Betty Ann loved her family and friends, and was very supportive of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, often traveling many miles to watch them compete in sports and other activities. She loved gardening of all types, but especially had beautiful rose gardens and iris beds. One of her great joys was cooking for her son’s outfitting camp which she did for years.
In the eyes of her family, she was the counsellor for all, loved unconditionally, and gave the best hugs.
Betty Ann is survived by two sons, Mike (Cinde) of White Sulphur Springs, Montana, John (Paula) of Nampa, Idaho; three daughters, Bunny (Gary) Miller, Nancy Hirsch, Cathy (Joe) Donnelly of Miles City, Montana; one brother, Randall (Ginger) Carey of Bothel, Washington, two sisters, Helen Jones of Miles City, Montana, Peggy (Herb) Barrrett of Seattle, Washington, and a sister-in-law, Bernice Carey, of Miles City, Montana; 14 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, parents, Ira and Bessie Carey, step-father, Newton Hollowell, her sister, Irene Gresens, and her brother, Del Carey.
