Cedric Ray Spotted Elk “He’yo’va’ste” (Yellow Man), was tragically taken from us on the night of Friday July 25th, “2014” near Ashland, Montana. Cedric was born in Crow Agency, Montana on April 8th, 1960 to Fern Powder Face Spotted Elk and Alex Spotted Elk of Lame Deer, Montana.
Cedric was raised in Lame Deer and brought up in a traditional Cheyenne home where the Cheyenne language was fluently spoken. He attended the native America church with his father, Alex when he was a little boy.
Cedric was the youngest of his siblings and watched his father, Alex and older brother, Kenneth break wild horses near their home on the south side of Lame Deer.
Cedric attended the Lame Deer School for his education and later left for Kicking Horse Job Corp in Ronan, Montana. When he returned he became a fire fighter with the “MIFF” in Lame Deer and did odd jobs for whoever needed an extra hand.
Cedric came from a family line of chiefs who was also a direct descendant of Chief Little Wolf and Chief Spotted Elk. He was a humble and simple man that wasn’t perfect but always had a smile to offer and would attend church services on a regular basis when he could at the Catholic Church.
Although he never married or had any children of his own he did have plenty of nieces and nephews that were like his brothers and sisters that grew up with him. Sledge, as he was known by everyone, enjoyed reading, listening to music, and watching western movies, but above all he loved his company down town where you would often find him.
Cedric was preceded in death by both of his parents, Fern Powder Face and Alex Spotted Elk; his sisters: Cora Spotted Elk, Irene Spotted Elk Wilson, Jenny Spotted Elk, Mabel Small; his brothers: Joseph Medicine Elk, Robert Pine, Abraham Spotted Elk Sr., Joseph Morrison Sr; special nephew, Wamblee Spotted Elk; grandson, Alex Little Coyote.
He is survived by his sisters: Rhoda (Vernon) Bull Coming, Inez Wilson, Adeline Spotted Elk of Lame Deer, Montana, and Lydia (Francis) Hamilton of El Reno, Oklahoma. Brothers: Kenneth Spotted Elk Sr., Wesley (Jodi) Spotted Elk of Lame Deer, Montana, Navitt (Maxine) Spotted Elk of Blanding, Utah. Many nieces and nephews, and grandchildren from his brothers and sisters that were as his own. Special friends: James Kills Night, Magdalene Walks Nice, and the rest of his buddies. Extended family include: All of Little Wolf Descendants, Wolf Names, Harris, Runs Above’s, Red Cherries, Black Wolf’s, Whistling Elk’s, High Bull’s, Twenty Stands, Medicine Elk’s, White Mans, Little White Mans, Big Left Hands, Wild Hogs, Deafys, Powder Faces, Bearquivers, Lone Bears, Wolf Tooths, Pines, Fishers, Plenty Camps, Teeths, Little Old Mans, Two Two’s, Foote’s, Medicine Top’s, Beaver Hart’s, Shoulder Blade’s, Hart’s, Rock Road’s, Small’s, Seminole’s, Round Stone’s, Wilson’s, Yellow Plume’s, Curley’s, Wolf Voice, High Walker’s, Hamilton’s, All Runners, Sioux Calf’s, Prairie Bear, Limpy, Rivas, Puente, (Annie) Limber Hand, Myron (Cheryl) Little Bird. If we have missed anyone please forgive us we didn’t mean to.
The family of Cedric would like to thank the rescue team and emergency room for all they had done for him, and a special thank you to all his northern Cheyenne people for all the kindness you have bestowed upon Cedric and the caring you gave him.

Even if a lot of people ignored you, a sandwich or a cig was given to you by our Daughter. No one is perfect but, you still walked up to people to give them your smile and lending a hand when needed. You will be missed by those who looked for you when we went home. The Store or Depot will not be the same. Have a good Journey Home. Prayers sent to your Sisters and Brothers. “Sed” Rest In Peace. Here’s your great saying “Cha”.

One of the most profound things he ever said to me was “don’t ever be mad or have a harsh word.” That is one of the things I remember about my friend….always a smile, even in hard times. He would always stop by my office every chance he got, maybe several times too many. We will see you again my friend.

an old classmate, he always had good words to say. Will miss seeing him walking around. My grand daughter Decheiya always worried about him and would give him what she could when she seen him around. He left this world in an untimely fashion, but has entered into a world of peace and love forever. Prayers for the family i n your time of sorrow.

My sincere condolences to the family Cedric Ray Spotted Elk. It was not the Creator’s purpose for mankind to suffer (Romans 5:12). May the Creator give you peace through his promise to comfort us (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4). Cherish all your happy memories and I hope that you are consoled by Bible promises of a hopeful future (John 17:3).
