Dick “Pop” Gaskill was born in Miles City, Montana on April 17, 1947 to Charlie and Ila (Mitchell) Gaskill. He joined two older sisters: Poppy (Slug) Mills and Della (Kenny) Greslin. Dick grew up on the family ranch on Pumpkin Creek, where he ranched and continued to live until he passed on February 23, 2023.
Dick married Sherry (Samuelson) Gaskill in 1969. They were married for 34 years. To this union they welcomed three children: Tawny, Ila and C.J.
Dick has always been a cowboy and rancher at heart. He has had several side jobs over the years from custom combining, trapping and school bus driver. He also added truck driver to his resume in 2001. He enjoyed hauling hay and cattle with his sidekick PeeWee. Later he bought a CAT (dozer) and trailed and hauled it to several fires for the Forest Service throughout the years. He also made one of his dreams come true when he got his pilots license and bought his piper cub airplane. This made checking water on the ranch less of a chore and more of a full enjoyment!
Dick married Darlene (Brown) Gaskill in 2008 in Deadwood, South Dakota. Darlene was by his side for 18 years.
Dick is survived by his wife Darlene, two daughters: Tawny McGill and husband Lewis, Ila Gnerer and husband Steve, and son C.J.; his grandkids: Lane McGill, Lawson (Elle) McGill, Kaleb Gnerer, Gavin Gnerer, Mia Gnerer, Farrah Gaskill and Chas Gaskill.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Miles City. Interment will be held in the Custer County Cemetery in Miles City. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: www.stevensonandsons.com.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Broadus Cancer Fund or St. Vincent de Paul in Broadus.

Darlene- One thing you and I are going to miss is the laughter we heard on our ends of the phone line any time Sonny and Dick talked, even though we were pretty sure it was directed at one of us! Sonny just said he doesn’t know who he’s going to call to tell his stories to. I know it’s not the same, but we are sharing your loss. Thinking of you as well as the rest of Dick’s family and friends.

Sorry to hear about Dick. Dick helped us get started at our ranch on Tongue River when we started out. I remember calving out Longhorn cross heifers for him and running the cattle on shares. Dick flew his plane up here one time and landed it in the pasture and helped us brand some of his calves. We will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.
