Cheryl Kay Stevenson, age 55, of Anniston, Alabama passed away unexpectedly on March 20, 2019. Cheryl was born on November 2, 1963 in Poplar, Montana to Margaret and Hugh Stevenson. The Stevenson family moved to Prairie County in 1970 where they lived and worked on a ranch north of Terry. Cheryl, her older sister, Erma, who was still a teenager herself, and her four younger siblings moved from the ranch into Terry in 1975 after the tragic death of her father and brothers, Lynn and Jimmy, in a horrific automobile accident. Cheryl attended all 12 years of school in Terry and graduated from Terry High School in 1982. She was raised by her older sister, Erma, with whom she had a very strong bond. During her high school years, Cheryl also lived with the Hinnalands in Terry and became a part of their family. After graduation, she attended Dawson Community College for a semester and worked in several jobs before moving to Colorado Springs where she met and married her best friend forever, Larry Helminick. On July 3, 1988, their pride and joy, Jayme Helminick, was born and soon afterward, the three of them moved to Korea for a year where Larry was stationed in the US Army. After Korea, they were stationed in Germany and then Fort Knox, Kentucky before returning to Fort Carson in Colorado Springs where Larry retired. Cheryl was a patriotic supporter of her husband’s career through all of their moves and his retirement from the Army in 2003. After retirement, they moved to Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Although they divorced in 2005, they remained close friends for the rest of her life.
Cheryl loved God and she loved her family dearly, especially her son, Jayme, and her grandchildren who knew her as “Nana”. Although she moved many times to support Larry’s career, she always found employment at the new location and was known as a very hard worker. She completed her Associates Degree while in Kentucky and worked in various retail and management jobs. One of her favorite jobs was working in the garden department in a home improvement store as she loved working outside, helping people, gardening, and flowers. Cheryl was a caring person and loyal friend. She had many friends and loved to be around people. She was a fun-loving person who loved to laugh and could make others laugh easily. She loved spending time with friends and family, her pets, taking long road trips, enjoying good food, going to car races, reading books, running, and watching football. She was a devoted fan of the Denver Broncos.
Cheryl is survived by her much-loved son, Jayme (Miranda), precious grandsons, Karson Lee and Raylen James, and granddaughter Arizona Paige, and her best friend, Larry Helminick who she affectionately called Lar Bear. She also leaves behind 8 brothers: Hugh (Joan), Ken (Chris Ann), John, Randy, Charlie (Julie) Stevenson, Charles (Melinda) Sumner, Keith (Regina) Sumner, and David (Laura) Sumner and 3 sisters: Lori, Pam, and Shirley (Jeff). She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who meant a lot to her as well as many very special friends.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her father, Hugh, her biological mother, Margaret, her very special sister, Erma, who she considered to be her mother, and three brothers, Lynn, Jimmy, and Jerry Stevenson.
Memorials can be made to Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home in Miles City, Montana, in Cheryl’s memory to help with funeral expenses. Please contact the funeral home at 406-232-4457 for instructions.

My Journey’s Just Begun
Don’t think of me as gone away
My journey’s just begun
Life holds so many facets
This earth is but one
Just think of me as resting
From the sorrows and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
Where there are no days and years
Think of how I must be wishing
That you could know today
How nothing but your sadness
Can really go away
And think of me as living
In the hearts of those I touched
For nothing loved is ever lost
And she was loved so much

My sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Cheryl. It can be very difficult and distressing to cope with the loss of a loved one. It has helped myself and others knowing that our dear loved ones now rest in the loving memory of our Grand Creator, Jehovah.( Psalms 83:18-God’s name) May you be comforted to know that Jehovah hates death.( 1 Cor. 15:26) And promises to eliminate death forever and bring those sleeping in death back to life on a cleansed earth . ( John 17:3; Isaiah 25:7,8; Acts 24:15; Rev. 21:4,5; Psalms 37:10,11,29). I hope these few scriptures along with your own good and loving memory of Cherly help to bring comfort, peace and a hope. “She’s in the sun, the wind, the rain, she’s in the air you breathe with every breath you take. She sings a song of hope and cheer, there’s no more pain, no more fear. You’ll see her in the clouds above, hear her whisper words of love, you’ll be together before long, for her song.” Christy Ann Martine

My dear friend for life. No how many days months or years we have been apart, the second we spoke again, we never missed a beat. You were strong, smart, courageous, a fierce to be reckoned with when it came to what was right. You were also the most kind, generous compassionate, beautiful lady I’ve ever met. You took me in as sister of the army wife life. You showed me how to be strong and how to get back up when I was knocked down. You taught me to do for myself and hold my head high. You will be deeply missed. You will always be loved. You were always good to me and Michael and the girls. My heart is broken knowing it will be a while before I see you again. You were a true friend till the end. I will see you again. You are one of the few I could call my best friend. Larry, Jayme and the kids will always have us to fall back on for family of ever there is a need. Praying for the entire family and everyone that has been fortunate enough to know her. Rest my friend. See you again.

For her family: I knew Cheryl in the mid-80’s in Terry. She was a ton of fun and always ready for an adventure. My life was enriched by her presence in those years! My prayers are with you in the coming days.

Even though we did not stay in touch, we will always be woven into the same fabric, being raised in a community where we were all almost family. As I’ve gone through my own life meeting many people, I’ve realized what a very special place we were raised, and Cheryl and family were such important threads there. In reading the previous entries , I am comforted to know that as Cheryl lived her life she continued to be the wonderful person and friend I knew as a child. Some of my fondest memories include her. What a profound loss to so many. Godspeed my Friend…….
