Dale Marvin Stevenson, age 82, of Miles City went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, December 9, 2013 at Saint Vincent Health Care in Billings after complications from surgery with his family by his side.
Dale was born in Merrill, Wisconsin on August 15, 1931, the son of Hjalmer and Alma (Duranceau) Stevenson. Dale attended local schools and graduated from Merrill High School. He was very active playing football in high school for the Merrill Blue Jays and continued playing semi-pro football for the Merrill Foxes. In January of 1952, Dale enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to the family farm and cattle business in partnership with his father. Dale was married to his beloved wife and best friend Marlene Joan Van Der Geest on February 23, 1957. Following their marriage he attended School of Mortuary Science in Cincinnati, Ohio. Following his graduation in 1958, they moved to Miles City. In 1958, he went to work for J.E. Graves Funeral Home until 1962 when he purchased Hinther-Jensen Funeral Home and later changed the name to Stevenson Funeral Home which is now Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home. He was very proud of the fact that his three sons and now four grandsons are in the family business. Throughout the years he expanded the business to serve throughout Montana and North Dakota. Dale truly loved the people he served in this community. He instilled this great love for community in the next generation and generations to come to continue this great love for community. He was always grateful to the community
Dale was a charter member of Grace Bible Church, Commander of the American Legion, Montana State Board of Morticians and a member of many community organizations. Dales true loved was his wife and family. His biggest hobbies were his Clydesdale horses, making trips to the Van Der Geest Dairy Farms in Wisconsin, and working on his son Joes farm feeding and preparing horses, riding on his 4-wheeler, taking trips with Marlene and seeing his daughters in Branson and Orlando. One of his greatest accomplishments was the joy of reading the bible with Marlene every morning.
Dale is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Marlene Stevenson of Miles City, MT; three sons: Joseph Dale and his wife Patricia of Miles City; Jonathan Lee and his wife Marlys of Dickinson, ND; Todd Floyd and his wife Terri of Miles City; two daughters: Mary Ann Treat and her husband Tom of Branson, MO and Cathy Alma Hill and her husband Mark of Orlando, FL; his sister Joan (Roger) Gutknecht of Merrill, WI; twelve grandchildren: Jason Riley, Scott Joseph (Andrea), Mikel Dale and David Leroy (Suella) Stevenson; Nicholas Jon (Terri) and Brandon Dale (Wendy); Tiffany Lynn (Ren) Gardner and Todd John “TJ” Stevenson; Lucas Thomas William and Anna Marie Marlene Treat; and Tori Ann and Brittany Nicole Hill; eight great grandchildren: Carson Dale, Cooper Douglas, Colton Todd Gardner and one due in January; Joseph Patrick Stevenson; Sadie Marie, Nathan Jon, Ali Ann and Patrick James Stevenson and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his two brothers: Floyd Stevenson & Lee Stevenson, two sisters: Lola Waid & Vera Sutton and three nephews: Keith Sutton, Gary Van Der Geest and Dean Waid.

J Johnson says
Dear family of Dale Stevenson – Please be comforted by Bible promises at this difficult time. Be assured that it was not a part of the Creator’s purpose that people suffer and die. Everything made by God was “very good” (Genesis 1:31). Death was not a part of God’s purpose but was introduced by Adam’s disobedience (Romans 5:12). There will soon come a time when no one will be sick (Isaiah 33:24), the dead are resurrected (John 5:28, 29) and pain and death will be no more (Revelation 21:4). Faith in Bible promises will ease our pain in this time of loss. Treasure the many beautiful memories left by Mr. Stevenson. I hope that you are comforted by Bible promises of a hopeful future (John 17:3).

Miles City has benefited from Dale moving his family to town in 1958. His family has created friends through out the years. I have been able to get to know some of the family and they are good friends, good business men, good fathers, just as Dale was. He will be missed by Miles City. He lives on in his sons and grandsons, granddaughters, and his great grand children. Our Prayers are with the family. May god bless Dale Stevenson.

Our hearts are sad for all of you. What can you say to comfort a family that has spent their cumulative lives providing comfort to others in their time of loss??? The Stevenson family have been our neighbors, our friends, our classmates and our childhood playmates. Beyond all of that, they have provided respectful comfort to us during the 3 losses in our own family… most recently for our Mom in June. We have enduring admiration for each of them. Butch and I send our thoughts of sympathy from southern Wyoming to Marlene, Joe, John, Todd, Mary, Cathy and their families. Dale leaves a wonderful legacy behind of strong marriage, work ethic, and compassion, which he has taught to his children and grandchildren. We have experienced his legacy firsthand and know, without a doubt, that it will continue through generations of Stevenson lineage. Our heartfelt sympathies from the surviving Waldo “kids”: Cole, Tim, Ginger & Kolleen

Our thoughts are with the whole family and enjoy the pleasant memories as you all get together and share the many many stories you all had together growing up. What an exemplary set of parents you have 🙂 A lot of pride there along with a great service you provide to us all. Thanks to each and every one of you for that.
On the lighter side, I have a great story regarding the “men of the family”. Dad (Bob Barthelmess) got quite a kick out of them shaking his hand when he attended funerals and them telling him “We are just checking on your pulse”. I have heard him more then once remark as we walked in, “You get away from me” as they extended their hand and patted him on the back laughing. Great guys and he had the utmost respect for all of you.

Marlene:
I just wanted to take a minute and offer condolences in Dale’s passing. He was a dear friend of Mitch’s and he was so proud of the fact that Dale would drive over, just to visit. He enjoyed working on your ag equipment and when Ari passed away, it was Dale that Mitch talked. Maybe they have already had the opportunity to have one of those talks in heaven. Dale was a good man and what a great example of how hard work pays off. We enjoyed getting to worship with you both at Grace and you have always been a example of how a couple respects and loves each other. Having lost Mitch only a few months ago, the boys especially wanted your children to know…they know what it feels like to lose a dad, and their hearts are sad for you. I tell people all the time that my heart is sad but my soul is rejoicing because I know exactly where my loved ones are. I suspect you know exactly what I am talking about. Thank you for being such a wonderful example.

Always difficult to say the right thing at times like this, and you all face it every day. The best tribute any dad could have would be raising a successful family, instilling a good work ethic, being known as someone fun to be around, etc. Such is the case with Dale. Although I never visited very much with him, for some reason a story he told me about preparing the Christmas turkey, together with a goose, (you’ve all heard it a million times I imagine) stuck with me. I thought it was really cute and funny. The family is carrying on his legacy very well, although I worry about Joe and Todd a little. Best wishes. Doug & Lucy
