Darlene E. Handley Russell, age 81, of Miles City passed away on Friday, March 24, 2017 at the Holy Rosary Extended Care in Miles City.
Darlene started her journey in life on a spring day on May 24, 1935. She was born to Chester and Anna Handley. She shared her childhood with her two sisters, Annetta and Ethel in Miles City, Montana. She had one brother who passed away at birth. During her school years, Darlene played the clarinet, was in the school marching band, and she also played the piano by ear. Darlene graduated from Custer County High School in 1956. On August 19, 1956, she married James Russell, and they made their home in Miles City. Together they raised their four children, Kim, James (Jim), Laurie, and Karla. Darlene was blessed with seven grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Over the years, Darlene worked at Reynolds Warehouse Grocery and Buttrey Food and Drug/Albertsons. She was a cashier, and her true love was working in the floral department. Darlene was raised and was very active in the Foursquare Church in Miles City. She was a caring, giving and loving person, and a volunteer at the Custer County Community Table, the Custer County Food Bank, The Range Riders Museum, COPS and the Miles City VFW, where she worked serving benefit meals for various organizations. She served as the activity assistant at Holy Rosary Healthcare and Friendship Villa Care Center.
Darlene was an active member of the Degree of Honor Number 505, the Miles City Garden Club, and the Miles City Knitting Club. Darlene loved to travel, and if there was anything with four wheels (or even two), she was in it! Darlene opened her home for entertaining, and over the years hosted Christmas parties for many organizations. She and her husband Jim loved attending sporting events and cheering for their grandchildren. She had many dear friends. Darlene enjoyed attending family reunions and spending holidays with her family members. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life.
Darlene is survived by her sisters, Annetta Gable (Willie) and Ethel Lopez, her children Kim Russell Wheadon (Ed), James Russell Jr., Laurie Russell Jerome (Dennis), and Karla Russell Kings (Brad), seven grandchildren, three of which served in the armed forces, 18 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and her extended family.
