Hearing of Dawnley’s passing was like a punch to the gut. She was such a good friend to me in Busby, and I have thought of her often over the years, wondering how she is. My heart goes out to her family and friends during this tender time.
My memories of Dawnley mostly have to do with music. Little things, like the way she used to sit up straight and hold her horn just so, the way she would prepare her mouth play, the valves on the horn that emptied the spit out. 🙂 Our little band, sometimes just four of us (Dawnley on French horn, Lexi on drums, me on clarinet or saxophone, Genie, Leon, who else?): playing at basketball games, cake walks, football for a little while, and then that funny time when Mr. Graber tried to get us to march. (Right?) Trips to the International Peace Camp or whatever it’s called on the Canadian border for band camp. And then the trip to British Columbia, where we stayed at that motel in Victoria, went to the museum, and visited an island for ceremony. (Thank you, Dr. Braveheart!) And then just hanging out, the three of us, Dawnley, Genie, and me. (Until Bobby came into the picture.)
When my family moved to the Quileute Reservation, Dawnley was a senior and I was a junior. She and Bobby were an established couple. (Were they royalty at prom?) Moving to a different place and people was pretty disruptive for me, and it was such a good thing to get a letter from Dawnley. Inside the envelope was a lovely silver necklace, which I still wear.
Our lives went their own ways then, and after a few letters we never did get back in touch. I regret that. But I am heartened to know that Dawnley had a big family, and a rich life.
Blessings on you, Dawnley, as you begin your life on the other side.
