Edith Ruth Nightwalker (He’ohnee’estse) of Lame Deer Montana, passed away on September 26th at the age 70 years. Edith was born to Roy and Gladys (Williams) Nightwalker, on February 4, 1954. She was raised in the Fonda Community and attended school in Seiling, graduating at Seiling High School. Early years she worked for Ashland Saw Mill, St. Labre house parent, Northern Cheyenne prosecution, and Chief Dull knife day care. She married (later divorced) Blaine Real Bird and lived in Garryowen MT with the Real Bird and Moccasin Family out of this union she had Jay Dee and Angel Real Bird. She later continued her education to become a Licensed Drug and Alcohol counselor at Lame Deer recovery center. She met George Little Head (later divorced) out of this union; they had their late child (Baby Little Head) together they raised their grandkids and great grandkids in Lame Deer MT. Edith was caring, helpful, and a loving person to anyone she crossed paths with. She lived a very positive life which included being sober for 37 years, being involved in powwows, watching rodeos, sewing her granddaughters dancing dresses, her grandkids were the light of her life.
In addition to her parents Roy Nightwalker and Gladys (Williams) Nightwalker, Edith is preceded in death by her sons Merlin “Chubby” Orange, Jay Dee Real Bird, and Baby Little Head, also her grandson Marty Bigback JR. Her siblings Jean Nightwalker, Peggy Yazzie, Leda Joyce, Roy “Junior” Walking Night, Infant brother Bobby, and adopted sister Angie BlackWolf. Edith is also survived by her daughter Angel Real Bird, Son Wade Red Hat, Granddaughters Jayanna, Myleigh, Megwan, Gethsamne, Randall, Janae, JayCee Real Bird, Savanna, Ambria Orange, Lucian and Ximeana Red Hat. Her great-grandsons Jaydel Elkshoulder and Geordell Knows Gun. Edith had Seven great-grandkids. Also her six brothers and sisters, Freddie Nightwalker of WA, Jane Nightwalker of OK, Alvina Nightwalker of MT, George Nightwalker of MT, Bertha Kay Nightwalker of Denver, CO, and Alberta Nightwalker of MT. Adopted Sisters; Francine Real Bird, Farrel Evans, Sue BigBack and Andreda Harris. Extended Family; Nightwalker, Limpy, Strange Owl, Belly Mule, Yellow Robe, Red Neck, Elkshoulders, Real Birds and Moccasins of Garryowen MT. She was loved by many, the family apologizes for anyone they might have left out during this difficult time.
The family wants to thank the health staff Janet Cooper, Laquinta Fighting Bear, Mark Fields and St. Vincent’s cancer center and The IHS CHR’s. Also The family priests Dennis Bowers, Jim Weist, Park and Misty Timber.
