On the afternoon of November 12, 2013, Evelyn passed away peacefully at Heritage Acres Nursing Home in Hardin, MT as a result of a long illness. Evelyn was 81 years old.
Evelyn Flying was born on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation on October 18, 1932. She was the daughter of Lawrence Flying & Eva Ghost Bull. She was the eldest of her four siblings: John Paul, Ellsworth, Lawrence Jr, and Henry. Her Cheyenne name is Ma’heoneme’eohtse’e, Sacred Woman Appearing.
Evelyn grew up in Lame Deer and Kirby. She married “Big Tom” Medicine Elk on the 26 March 1951. They had 3 children: Tom Jr. “Jr. Boy” Medicine Elk, Bruce “Hoggie” Medicine Elk and Ernestine Medicine Elk. She remarried and resided in Minneapolis MN with her husband Bud Merry from 1966 – 1983 where she ran a neighborhood grocery store. Upon returning to Lame Deer she worked with disabled children and then worked many years as the Assistant Manager of the Shoulderblade Complex in Lame Deer where she cooked breakfast for the residents. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were very important to her. Evelyn thought highly of all of them and she was happy to learn about each of their accomplishments.
She is survived by her siblings: Pauline of Havre, MT, Mary Jane and Oliver of Rosebud Reedistrict, nephews Richard Littlebear and Winfield Russell of Kirby, MT, George Scalpcane of Ree/district, niece Laura Lonebear of Muddy Creek and Leah Lonebear Lame Deer, cousins Al Lester of Ashland, MT and Nancy Yellowrobe of Lame Deer, special friends Emmaline Gleason and Clara Harris of Lame Deer, adopted children Isadore Whitewolf of Lame Deer and Barbara Bement of Muddy Creek, stepchildren Tootie Hamburgh of Hardin, MT and Linda Rash of Colorado, Cheyenne namesakes Sahiyela Wii Mesteth and Marty Lynn Ewing.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents Lawrence Flying & Eva GhostBull; her brothers John Paul Flying, Ellsworth Flying, Lawrence Flying Jr. and Henry Flying, Fenton Byrd Flying. Evelyn’s Son’s Thomas Medicine Elk and Bruce Medicine Elk and her daughter Ernestine Medicine Elk.

Nolan (Brandy) Keough Medicine Elk of Wolf Point, Montana, Jacob (Heather) Hugh Amo of St. Paul, Minnesota, Amanda Rachel Dionne of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Vivienne Rain Tateyuskanskan Medicine Elk of Enemy Swim, South Dakota. Hunter Vine Tateyuskanskan Medicine Elk of Enemy Swim, South Dakota, Barry Medicine Elk, Leslie Carisis-Medicine Elk, Manulita Wilson-Medicine Elk, Jeremiah Medicine Elk (Poplar, MT). She is also survived by great grandchildren.
Thank you to the special care givers at Billings Health and Rehabilitation Community in Billings, Montana and Heritage Acres Nursing Home in Hardin, Mt. A special thank you to the many caring friends and relatives who visited Evelyn throughout her illness and gave her comfort.
Evelyn will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony. She is loved and will be missed.
Funeral Services will be Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home of Forsyth. Private burial will take place at a later date.
