Helen Shear Mathiason, age 92, of Terry passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014 in Terry.
Helen was born on September 17, 1921 in rural Mildred, Montana, the only child of Albert Shear and Floy Hill Shear. The Hill and Shear families came to Mildred from Burr Oak, Michigan. She graduated from Mildred High School, where she met and married Adolph Mathiason. Adolph preceded her in death in 1989. She is survived by their 2 children Tonette (Vern) Stark of Ollie, MT; Alan (Sandy) Mathiason of Mildred, MT; four grandchildren: Judd (Tawny) Stark, Amanda (Jay) Berg, Dustin Mathiason, Kyle Mathiason; three great grandchildren: Kate Stark, Grady Berg and Ericka Berg; two nieces: Karen Stockett and Lynn Mathiason; and a great niece, Jessica Stockett. Helen’s first love was her family. She always prepared Thanksgiving Dinner for family and friends.
Helen was an outstanding person. Her friendship was a blessing to all who knew her. She loved her many friends, gardening, canning tomatoes, flowers, her kitties and playing her piano. Helen loved to go fishing for catfish in Fallon Creek. She had many stories of fishing and camping at Intake when she was a child.
She fed the birds and enjoyed watching them at her many feeders. She loved to cook and bake. She always had a special treat for friends who stopped to visit. Bread, buns, pies and cookies were always homemade at her house. Her specialties were Tea Rings and Julekake.
She was a member of the Eastern Star and The Prairie County Museum. Local history was her passion. She knew every item in the museum and loved sharing her knowledge with others. Helen was very active in the Mildred Church and Ladies Aide. She looked forward to their annual fall bazaar. Helen served as the news correspondent of Mildred for the Terry Tribune for many years. In 1993 she made a trip to Pennsylvania. She had always wanted to see Gettysburg. She visited Gettysburg and many other historical sites including the Carnegie Museum. Helen was a very special lady; sadly missed by all who loved her. Prairie County has lost a treasure

My sincere condolences to the family of Helen Shear Mathiason – It was not the Creator’s purpose for mankind to suffer (Romans 5:12). May the Creator give you peace through his promise to comfort us (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4). Cherish all your happy memories and I hope that you are consoled by Bible promises of a hopeful future (John 17:3).
