Ione Frances Rummel Cady peacefully passed away with her family at her side on Jan. 17, 2021. She was born to Fred and Lottie (Gallagher) Rummel on August 13, 1929 in Richardton, ND where she attended school and graduated from the Assumption Abbey High School in 1947. After high school she received her teaching certificate and taught in a country school. On October 12, 1949 Ione and Edward A. Mayer were married and their union was blessed with six children; Dudley, Larry, Shelly, Rick, Jeff and Linda. Together they owned and operated several businesses; the Pool Hall and Confectionary in Fromberg, the Hilltop Tavern in Hardin and the Custer Bar in Custer. They later divorced and Ione and Bruce M. Cady were married April 24, 1969 and were blessed with a daughter Reina. In 1976 Ione and Bruce took over the family business known as Cady’s Gas in Lame Deer, MT, where she resided until her retirement in 2006 and then moved to Billings, MT.
Ione was one of the most dedicated, kindest and hardest working people around and through the years she instilled her work ethic in her children as well as all those who worked for her. She was always there to make very generous donations to all events in the Lame Deer community and was known for serving a great cup of coffee. She loved family get togethers which always included lots of good food and laughter and maybe a bit of bickering! She loved old time classic country music and had a green thumb that could grow anything. In her later years she always had the most beautiful flowers in the neighborhood. Although Ione was very humble, she was extremely proud of all her children and grandchildren. After retirement she enjoyed following her grandchildren from basketball games to football games, track meets, motor cross races and rodeo. Recently, her great grandchildren had earned an extra special place in her heart! One of her many happy places was at lake with her brother Arnold his wife Bobbie. Although Bobbie was a sister-in-law, they always considered each other sisters.
Ione is preceded in death by her father and mother, Fred and Lottie Rummel; her brothers Peter Gartner, Donald Rummel, Arnold Rummel and sons Dudley Cady and Edward Mayer, Jr. at infancy.
Until they meet again, Ione is survived by her husband, Bruce of Billings; her daughters Shelly (Doug) Cahill of Brockway; Linda (Heath) Hoffman of Huntley and Reina Cady of Billings; her sons Larry (Debbie) of Ashland; Rick (Ann) of Colstrip and Jeff (April) of Lame Deer; her grandchildren KC (Terry) Lang; Desi Raye Cady; Chalsea Cady (Hoss Small); Tanner (LeAnn) Cahill; Tyzer (Ronni) Cady; Torrie (Ryan) Neumann; Zack Cady; Shelby (Sklyer) Limberhand and Tristan Hoffman; great grandchildren Charlei, Morgan, Lawrence and Haylei Cady; Carter and Colson Cahill, Nolan Neumann, Madison and Cooper Limberhand and Atlas Cady. She is also survived by her sister Pat (Bill) Freidt, Mott, ND, her brother Jerry Rummel, Richardton, ND and her sisters-in-law, Bobbie Rummel and Gladys Rummel of Dickinson, ND, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank The Springs at Grand Park in Billings and Stillwater Hospice Care and Stevenson and Sons for all the kindness, care and support. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to Stillwater Hospice of Montana in Billings or Alzheimer Association-Montana or to organization of your choice.

So sorry for the loss of your mother. She was a wonderful and kind woman. Her laugh was contagious and her smile was brilliant. My favorite memories of Ione and Bruce we’re when they owned Cady’s gasoline and how they ran around helping customers and carrying on conversations with many people at the same time. I remember her telling us “What you put into life is what you get out of it!” Thank you Ione for being a great role model for me. To all her family God bless and keep you all safe and healthy.

Ione was a very beautiful lady. Not once did I see her in a bad mood. Even after we moved to Billings, when we were at Dolly’s with are daughters and all the cousins we would let them go down to Cady’s for a treat. I remember once going along with them and after all hands on the glass infront of the candy – I mentioned to Ione that she must have to clean the glass several times a day. She smiled back and said that she enjoyed hearing how each child picked their candy and their excitment made her day. Ione was so special and she passed on her happiness to others that may have had a bad day. Please be comforted by your memories and our sympathy goes to all of you at this sad time.
