Jack Larson’s Video Tribute
BRING YOUR CORDUROY!!
For anyone attending Jack Larson’s funeral please, bring your FFA jacket with you and place it on the back of your chair during the funeral and also during the reception. (Don’t worry — it does not have to fit, lol! We will just hold them up for a picture!) Please share this so that no one misses the opportunity to pay tribute to Mr. Larson with a sea of blue and gold.
Jack Raymond Larson – Mr. Larson, Dad, and Papa – was called to his heavenly Home the morning of November 1, 2023, at his home in Miles City, after a short, courageous battle with cancer.
Jack was born on March 14, 1957, in Billings, MT, the youngest of three boys born to Orville and Violet Larson. Jack grew up on the family’s farm, where his passion for agriculture was born. This was also where Jack’s work ethic and service-minded outlook developed. Growing up on the family farm was not without its share of fun. Jack, Ron, and Jim had a constant stream of adventures, from rolling tires out in front of each other on bicycles at night, to riding car hoods down hills into the icy creek bottoms. It was not uncommon for someone to wind up with injuries of some sort. Their father had commented that as often as he had kids in the emergency room for stitches and broken bones, it was a wonder that Child Protective Services hadn’t paid them a visit.
Jack attended school in Huntley Project, graduating from high school in 1975. Jack’s love of agriculture and his early involvement in FFA – and role as a State FFA officer – prompted him to attend Montana State University, graduating in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Education. It was during this time that his good friend Verlin Miller introduced Jack to Marian Milmine. Jack often shared with his children that God told him that she was the one – and that the courtship was a challenge, as she was so shy!
After college, Jack started his teaching career in Melstone, MT, a community and position that would forever hold a special place in his heart. Jack taught in Melstone for 4 years. On July 31, 1983, Jack married the love of his life, Marian. Jack and Marian Larson moved to Miles City from Melstone in 1983, a transition that placed Jack as the new agricultural education teacher at Custer County District High School.
At CCDHS, Jack guided his FFA chapter to produce and assist with several school and community events such as the annual Go Western Days Rodeo, a high school rodeo for Miles City students – participants often numbered over 200 cowboys and cowgirls from every walk of life; the Cowtown Beef Breeders Show (or Bull Sale); and the annual Christmas Stroll. Building one of the largest programs in the state, his 1000+ high school graduates amassed many state and national awards and scholarships. For many years, the Ag Ed program at CCDHS was Montana’s model for gender equity, a distinction that Jack was proud of. After 25 years of teaching, Jack retired from CCDHS but did not leave education for long. In 2004, Jack started at Miles Community College as the Agricultural Instructor, a position he would hold until 2008. A true educator at heart, a phone call from a former student prompted Jack to enter new territory in 2010 as the vocational instructor and coordinator at Pine Hills Youth Correctional Facility in Miles City, a position he would maintain until the fall of 2019. This was a challenging yet rewarding pursuit in which Jack focused on rebuilding student and adult lives with agricultural/vocational education and hope restoration. This was Jack’s third attempt at retirement, and it looked like it was going to stick!
Jack was fortunate to discover his true passion early in life: people. Jack loved people! Jack was a beloved teacher, who selflessly gave his time and energy to his students. This often looked like long FFA practices, meetings, and events that went on late into the evenings – but we know that his contributions often surpassed this. At the end of the day, Jack cared about more than his students’ success in the classroom or shop – he cared about their success in life. Jack and Marian always marveled at how many of his students over the years stayed in their lives – later becoming friends – for life.
Jack and Marian were blessed with 40 years of marriage and three children: Garrett (1988); Jordan (1990), and Inga (1992). Jack shared many of the activities he enjoyed with his children such as hunting, camping, and fishing; he also shared his passion for agriculture, which resulted in all three of his children later entering careers based around the industry. Some of the family’s most treasured memories were made camping on the West Rosebud over Labor Day weekends. A skilled fly fisherman, even in the worst conditions, Jack could be counted on to pull a whopper out of the smallest hole. Jack reveled in his role as “Papa” to his two grandsons, Jaxton, and Walker, who adored him.
Jack’s Christian faith was essential to the life he built with Marian; Jack and Marian were members of Grace Bible Church for 40+ years. Jack shared that their greatest accomplishment was that their three children were Christ-followers. Jack credited God for walking with him through the cancer battle, as well as the rest of his life.
Over the course of 40+ years working with youth and adults in agricultural and vocational education, Jack touched many lives, both in and out of the classroom, always instilling and living by the FFA motto: Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve. Jack was a proud graduate of Zig Ziglar’s “Born to Win” motivational training program in Dallas, Texas. A favorite quote that Jack shared with his children and students was: “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.” This philosophy of servitude is one that he exemplified throughout his life. Jack served on several community and state boards and advisory committees during his lifetime. For several years, Jack was involved with the Ag Committee for the Chamber of Commerce and the Custer County Rural Volunteer Fire; he also helped facilitate the local Toast Masters International group and the local Republican committee. Jack was a Director on the Montana FFA Foundation Board for the past two decades. A lifelong musician, Jack also ran the state FFA Talent Contest for many years, encouraging youth to share their music and various other talents at the MT FFA State Convention. Due to the cancer complications, 2022 was the first year since 1967 that Jack was not able to attend the convention. Jack himself would not like his numerous awards and recognitions to be listed, but his family would like to recognize him receiving the Honorary American FFA Degree at the 2022 National FFA Convention – a trip to Indianapolis that he courageously combined with a cancer treatment – and the Lee Boyer Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2023 MT FFA Convention.
The Lord blessed Jack with several talents which he used for the good of those around him. Jack had a wonderful sense of humor and the gift of communication. Jack could always be counted on for a “corny” joke or story to lighten the mood; he could also be counted on for his abundant wisdom, genuine kindness, and creativity. Jack had a way of waking up a room! He was not one to follow the crowd – and he was not afraid to upset the applecart or to say what needed to be said! Jack was civic minded and cared deeply about his country, family, friends, and community, whom he served with purpose. Even in his final few days, Jack spoke of our need to “serve the people”.
Jack will be missed not only by his wife, children, and grandsons but by communities of friends and family across the country that loved him. We’ve lost him too soon. His strong yet gentle spirit will be greatly missed.
Jack is survived by his wife of 40 years, Marian Larson; son, Garrett Larson (Raylene) and grandsons Jaxton and Walker; son, Jordan Larson; and daughter, Inga Hawbaker (Charley). Jack is also survived by his mom, Violet Larson (Orville); aunt, Lois Kiser (Al); brothers, Ron Larson (Sally) and Jim Larson (Carol) along with numerous nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews.
Jack is preceded in death by his father, Orville R. Larson, his grandparents, and several uncles and aunts; some of his dearest friends: Verlin Miller, Harvey Wolff, and Mitch Beach. Can you imagine the reunion they’re having?
In lieu of flowers, Jack’s family asks for donations to be made to the Miles City FFA Alumni and to the Wake Up & Lace Up organization. Checks can be made out and mailed to the following:

Jim Squires says
Our condolences to Marian and family. Jack was a unique person whose efforts in life rescued many young people from disaster. His wisdom and practicality were only matched by his compassion and concern.
George and Jan Simmons says
To all of Jack’s family and friends my heart goes out to you. Jack was the best of the best. Keep the wonderful memories and that will bring a smile in his absence. 🙏🏼😢💕. These are memories I shared with the Western Ag Network—- Jack Larson was a wonderful human who saw the best in all he met. He was among the best to ever teach Agriculture Education. As a new educator he was a mentor extraordinaire. Jack’s love for music was beyond what few music teachers will ever have, from running the FFA talent at State Conventions to playing and singing on a bus with a bunch of Ag Teachers traveling Montana’s highways. I never heard a word from Jack that was derogatory, rather he always had a compliment or praise. Jack, Heaven is a better place today and say hello to Mr. Jimmerson for me!
Carl Igo says
Jack leaves an indelible impact on agriculture, agricultural education and the FFA Organization throughout Montana and beyond. His humor, diligence and focus, even amidst the health struggles, remind us all to live out our mission and be better humans, to find our passions and support each other.
Lori (Rooney) Donnelly says
To Marian and family. I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Larson’s passing. He was a wonderful teacher to so many and such a kind, caring person. I have many good memories through the years that I have known him. The most recent was of him playing music for my son Larry’s wedding in July. They both really appreciated him agreeing to do that for them. He will truly be missed by many. Heaven has gained another angel way to soon. I bet he is having quite a reunion with Uncle Harvey, Verlin, and many others. Love and prayers to you all!
Debbie Weyer says
My heart breaks that we lost a good one, but it is rejoicing knowing that he is with Jesus. It also makes me smile, that he, Harvey and Verlin are together again. This quote brought me a lot of comfort, so Marian and family I hope it will you also.
DEATH leaves a heartache no one can heal, LOVE leaves a memory no one can steal. May God comfort uou all.
Marshall and Patty Williams says
So sorry Marian and family, will always have fond memories of his light heart, positive attitude, his work with students, and devotion to family. As you know he touched many lives and if a measure of life’s succes is how many friends you have, what a successful life. So happy we had a long conversation this spring. Sure will miss him.
Scott and Becky Rehbeinu says
Our deepest wish for the family is to know that your husband, dad, family member Jack left a great footprint on this town and the individuals who ever met him or were taught buy him. It doesn’t matter what title he held but how he taught or spoke to people or listened. He was a blessed spirit to all. His legacy lives on in the students he taught and the people he touched on this earth. Our blessings and God Speed Mr. Jack.
Tom and Kathy Wankel says
May God lift you up, Marion and family, and give you comfort, peace and strength. We are saddened that we lost such a wonderful friend who did so much for us and our kids through FFA….but happy for Jack that his pain and struggle is over.

Lori Clark says
I loved Jack! He was such an amazing person I’m really gonna miss him dearly. Prayers to his children and his beautiful wife. Blessed to have you in my life.
Richard Bonine says
This really hurts. Jack was an amazing individual. He was a VoAg teacher for forever and made a serious difference in the community. Jack and I used to play in a band together for 4-H dances and other events. He and I were in a fraternity at moo u. He threw a bag of bird seed in the car at my wedding. I vacuumed it out for years. If you go look the words “class act” up in the dictionary, you will find Jack’s picture. All of southeastern Montana is poorer today with Jack’s passing.
Marian and family, condolences don’t seem like enough. I wish you peace and comfort in this difficult, painful, and trying time.
James Arneson says
The memories of working at the school district with you and running into you up town to visit in passing, I will miss that. I send my deepest condolences to all of Jacks family and friends. May God bless you all with the best of memories now and always.

Marion and family
I met Jack 41 years ago at the National FFA Convention I was a senior and he and his brother Jim had coordinated travel for Montana FFA back then. Little did I know then he’d become a friend and mentor as I became an Ag Teacher. Our kids were in the same age bracket so we’d share family stories as we watched each other’s grow up. He’d always ask when we visited about my boys and how they were doing. He was proud that one of my son’s is one of the FFA advisors at Huntley where he was an FFA member. He told me I was the sister he never had, what an honor to be a sister to such a wonderful man. My chapter traveled with Miles City to National FFA Convention a couple times what memories we have from those trips. When I divorced he listened and consoled when I remarried years later he nearly crawled through the phone with happiness that we’d asked him to marry us. No one could have made the service so special. He’d known Tex and had taught his kids and grandkids. They’ll never be another Jack Larson we were so blessed to have him in our lives. Always a positive force and always said the best and seen the best in everyone. As one of my former student said God needed a real good angel in heaven. May our memories ease your loss, love you all. I remember Mr. Larson encouraging higher education so we didn’t spend our lives “flipping burgers”, and reminding us that if we left our cash at home, we couldn’t spend it. I remember him patiently teaching every student like they were his only student, and for his deep love for God and country and family. Amazingly well done, good and faithful servant.

Condolences to Marion and family, this saddens my heart and I pray for comfort and guidance through this journey. Jack’s love of life was infectious to all who met him. He truly made a huge impact on me, his compassion held no boundaries and his love for our Lord was a gift he shared with all. His rodeo wish during the Bucking Horse Sale this year and his continued involvement with our program has served me a renewed appreciation for sharing our western heritage with others…he gave me an imprint in life to continue giving to others….as kindness is the true gift in life. He has received the highest gift after life…HEAVEN🙏
Pam Bovee says
It is because of Jack that I am teaching at Pine Hills Correctional Facility. He saw that we needed a vocational program. He worked hard against all odds to get it up and running. They asked the 4 cooks in the main kitchen if anyone would like to teach a Culinary Art class. I said I would try it, that was 10 years ago. He was a mentor and became a friend. Some of the best times we had were our talks on politics, we always ended with agreeing to disagree!!
Only the great die young and he was the greatest.
R.I.P. Sir.

TO JACK LARSONS FAMILY, I SEND MY PRAYERS. WHEN I FIRST MET MR. LARSON IT WAS AN EXPERIENCE. HE WAS A GREAT TEACHER AND MENTOR. HE WAS ABLE TO LOOK PAST THINGS THAT OTHER TEACHERS AND PEOPLE WOULDNT. AS I READ A POST THAT A FRIEND HAD POSTED ON FACEBOOK, IT TOOK ME BACK TO MY EARLY YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL. I STILL REMEMBER THE FUN WE HAD IN CLASS, AND ON THE ROAD. EVEN AFTER I WAS OUT OF SCHOOL I WOULD SEE JACK AROUND TOWN, I WOULD GO OUT OF MY WAY JUST TO SAY HI AND SHOOT THE CRAP WITH HIM.
ALL IN ALL JACK WAS AN AWESOME TEACHER AND PERSON TO BE AROUND. HE WILL BE MISSED GREATLY.
UNTIL WE SEE YOU AGAIN.
THANK YOU JACK FOR ALL THE LESSONS THAT YOU TAUGHT US.

Mr. Larson was one of my teachers in high-school. Always had a friendly smile and knew how to brighten a day for anyone. His words were always filled with knowledge and advice and never judgemental. My deepest sympathies to Jack’s family. His love for his family was always evident. Like so many of his students I loved and admired Jack. He had a devoted love and respect for us even though we were mere children. He became a lifelong friend and mentor. My entire family will miss him for sure. He always had a way of expressing that his students were capable of just a little more than they actually thought was possible and he brought out the best in so many. I believe he lived out God’s purpose as well as any man can.
As a teacher Jack gave you freedoms, but with them came responsibilities…what better preparation for adult life could one ask for! I thank God for sharing this man with us!

Marian and Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you, and I hope that the many cherished memories that I am sure Jack provided you have helped fill the huge void in your lives these past few weeks. I was in Jack’s first classes in Melstone, and I still try to carry the character, integrity, humor, and great outlook on life that he demonstrated every day, not to mention his commitment to teaching and leading. I owe a great deal to Jack’s teaching, leading, and just plain conversations even today.
Sherri Roberts says
Jack was a true gentleman and he always had a kind word and a genuine concern for those he was around. It was a true pleasure to have had the chance to work with him in the SE when I taught voag at Ekalaka and at Lame Deer. His love of agriculture and the FFA was an inspiration. RIP.
