Jared Bankey says
My condolences on the loss of Jim to Diana and family. I enjoyed my time working with Jim at the city. He would sing a lineman for the cowboys to me on the start of the day. We spent some time together painting the gazebo in Riverside park and listening to the stories he could tell, will be fondly remembered. I can still see him climbing on the roof like a Kuala bear to paint the top. Ha. Then the times of having a beer after work that turned into many. He would have another or two or three waiting for you when you got back from the bathroom. Or maybe an apple Puckers shot. Take care Jim. Enjoyed the laughs
Brady Stone says
Dianne, Tanner, Lindsey, Kari, Kayla and Jeremy. My condolences to you all.
The first time I met Jim was 1989, water skiing at Spotted Eagle. He pulled us around that lake all day. His generosity knew no bounds. His humor could be crass, but his laughter was infectious. His loyalty to family, friends and coworkers was second to none.
When I think of Jim I think of service. He served those around him. He inspired people to look out after one another and to help those less fortunate. He was at one time or another a member of every service organization in town, (the Eagles and the Jaycees). He was a long-time public servant to the City of Miles City, as a public works employee. He was the local president of Local 283A and the Montana president of AFSCME Council 9. He spoke at the capital for workers rights and walked the picket lines of life speaking out and fighting for working class men and women everywhere.
If there was a raffle, a fund raiser, a girl scout cooky or any other item to raise money he was first in line as a supporter. My daughter’s girl scout cooky numbers were dismal until we hit Jim’s house.
Jim wore many hats. That of a husband, father, foster dad, union leader, coach, mentor. His proudest moment was watching Tanner and his friends win a state championship in football. He could talk about those days in detail.
Rest in peace my friend you earned it.
Goodbye brother Schweigert. In solidarity forever
Dan Jan sayer says
We were very sorry to hear of Jim‘s passing. Our deepest condolences to Jim‘s family. I grew up with Jim in Billings and became best friends for many years. After completing high school in miles city Jim moved back to Billings at which time he introduced me to Janice Balfour also a Miles City girl and the love of my life. Jim would later be the best man at our wedding, some four decades ago. Through watching kids grow up, fishing trips and meals shared over the years, we had many good memories. Jim was a natural born leader with a big heart. Godspeed Jim, till we see you again.
Dennis Hirsch family says
Diane, Kari. And all your families. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Dee Dee says
Jim’s passing leaves a hole in so many hearts. Jim was such a good Dad to Lindsay and Tanner and the many foster kids who lived with us, Paula Syring and Tim Rossow our two foster kids and later Paula our adopted daughter. Jim followed Tanner through years of AAU wrestling, taking Tanner and other wrestling kids to many tournaments out of town. Jim played football for Custer County High School and his son, Tanner, followed his path and played for CCHS for 4 years (and that team won State several years in a row)! Jim followed Lindsay through 4-H for many years, raising a horse for which we had no experience but because Lindsay wanted to have a horse. Both Lindsay and Paula played basketball and he followed the games. He eventually adopted Paula as his own. He was a Dad who would do anything for his children.
Jim believed in and fought for the rights of so many people. As the President of AFSCME for many years, he advocated for employee rights even at times when his own career was jeopardized by his union affiliation and political beliefs. At one point he actually lost his job at the City of Miles City due to politics. Even when he had a family and two little children at the time, he continued to fight the fight and eventually won the battle, not only for him, but the other employees employed by the city.
Besides being a great Dad, Jim was a wonderful cook. He brought home fresh fish from the Yellowstone River and Fort Peck Lake and could cook it up to taste like a 5 star dinner. He loved to hunt and processed his own hunting catch.
I could tell so many amazing stories about Jim. He loved people, he loved to laugh and loved life. Jim was a good husband, father, grandfather, son, son-in-law, uncle, and brother. Jim will be missed by so many.
REST IN PEACE Jim – no more suffering. I will always love you and will see you on the other side!
Chuck Kost says

After 50+ years of knowing Jim it’s hard to say good-bye. The things he and I did
together that will always be in my memory. A lot of people that are sending their condolences right now know the relationship Jim and I had. Luckily we never ended up in jail. At least not at the same time. I’ve been wanting to say something about his passing since I got the call Thursday night but after all of these years it’s hard to find the words. So I am going to share a couple of memories. I took Jim, Dee Dee, Anna and myself out for Jim’s first hunting experience. He shot an antelope. He said he had never field dressed an animal and he wanted to try it. I told him to go for it and I will guide him. I didn’t know there was that much blood in an antelope. He had blood all over both hands and arms. Even had blood on his clothes and face. Then he looked at me and said “Watch this.” He walked over to the truck, reached in through the window and asked Dee Dee for a cigarette. The reaction from my sister and Anna were priceless. That was Jim. We spent the weekend at Georgetown lake. When we got back to my hotel room after a day of fishing he decided to clean the fish. My mom and Dee Dee came into my room the next day and and asked what the hell had happened? What could I say. Jim cleaned fish. So many years of knowing Jim I could write a book of what he and I did together. Now those chapters are over. But they will always be a part of my life. I hope he is up there fishing with Juppa. Visiting with Harry and Edna. Say hi to Rex and Jerry for me buddy. We had a great adventure together. R.I.P my brother.

Diane and Paula and the rest of Jim’s big family. I point out Diane and Paula because it is through them that I knew Jim. And also through fishing with my sister and brother-in-law Darcy and Lyle Bennett. I’m sure Heaven has gained another angel, and am so glad Jim is no longer in pain. The picture used for this obit is exactly how I remember him. It is how I believe he looks in Heaven. So sorry for your loss. You will see him again, and this is how you will see him. God Bless
John L. Moore says
I will never forget sitting at a Dinner Show in Las Vegas starring Bill Cosby as one act and Ike and Tina Turner as the other. Jim sat across from me. Also sharing our table was a family from back east. The man wore a tuxedo and his wife and children wore clothing that would have cost more than my Toyota pickup. This man was a gentleman, but I suspected he had mob ties. Jim was wearing blue jeans and a white tee-shirt. Within minutes you would have thought Jim and this east coast gentleman were the best of friends. Such as it was with Jim.

May bright memories light the paths of Jim’s family and friends during this time. Jim seemed to have a great love of life and I’m pretty sure there were no strangers in his life. Only people he hadn’t met yet.

My condolences to Jim’s family. Jim came into my life through his wife at the time Dee Dee and mutual friend Kathy Grant. Those three were quite entertaining when they got together!
