John Allen Barnes, age 79, of Jordan passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 in Jordan.
Allen was born in Miles City, Mt. on December 17, 1935 to John J. and Helen Sindelar Barnes, the second of four children. He passed away on September 9, 2015 at his home. He grew up on the ranch at Cohagen and attended Grade school in Cohagen, going to Jordan for High School and living at the dormitory during the week. He graduated from Garfield County High school in 1953.
In June of 1954 he married his high school sweetheart Karen James and to this union were born a daughter Geraldine and two sons, Patrick and Larry. They began their married life at the ranch at Cohagen, moving to Jordan in 1956, when he went to work in the ASCS office of Garfield County. He remained at the ASCS office for 35 years, retiring in January of 1991. In 1992 he went to work for FitzGerald Trans. as a school bus driver on the route to Van Norman, driving until May of 2014.
He was a lover of the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. In 1988 they purchased a cabin at Hell Creek where they spent many happy hours in their Crestliner boat fishing. He loved having his family at the cabin, and especially enjoyed time pulling his grandchildren and great grandchildren on the tube. He enjoyed going to basketball and volleyball games, and attended as many of his grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s events as possible. He also enjoyed playing cribbage most week mornings.
He was a member of the Volunteer Fire Dept for many years, a member of the Pioneer Cemetery Board, many years as Chairman, and spent many hours working out there. He took great pride in keeping it looking nice. He received the Distinguished Service Award for service to Garfield Co. in 2004.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Geraldine in 2010. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Karen, sons Patrick and Larry, both of Jordan, five grandsons, one granddaughter and 6 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Pioneer Cemetery in Jordan.
