Daaevena’hun, Joseph Little Coyote, Sr. 75 passed on to Our Next Camp to join his loving wife, Brenda, son, Dewey, grandchildren Eugene, Jr., Seth Mikal, Alexander & great-granddaughter, Sopheira, and our Grandmothers and Grandfathers on Friday, May 18, 2018 surrounded by family & loved ones, per his wishes at home after a courageous, long battle with congestive heart failure.
After graduating from high school Joe, Sr. volunteered to enlist in the US Marine Corps at the young age of 17, with the loving support of his beloved grandparents, O-khome and Kyuh. Joe served tours of duty in the Vietnam Conflict; he came home where he met & married Brenda Bearchum, proudly fathering five children with her. His children are: Annita Jo (Fred), Dewey Michael (Diane), Eugene Daniel (Judith), Gina (James), and Joseph, Jr. (Ateara). After their son, Dewey preceded him & his wife in passing on, they lovingly and proudly adopted Diane as their daughter, so, as they put it, “We will always have five”.
He and his wife briefly relocated with their children to Boston, Massachusetts where they earned their Masters Degrees, his being in Education. He thereafter returned home to help his People.
Joe, Sr.’s life accomplishments, achievements, highlights and Cheyenne Landmarks in our People’s History are a long and vast, including being a Vietnam Veteran, Sacred Hat Keeper Sweet Medicine Chief, Sundance Priest, Ceremonial Healer, Piercer, Peyote Roadman, Tribal Councilman, doing so many impressive things with & for the Cheyenne People in various capacities until he eventually retired as the Tribal Planner. None of these things made him prouder then his family, ever the humble Ceremonial Man.
All of his relatives know who they are, too many to list here. Pallbearers are Joe’s grandsons: Brandon Little Coyote, Chris Little Coyote, Elijah Little Coyote, Hailey Little Coyote, Sky Little Coyote, Clayton Wolfblack, Michael Little Coyote, and Dewey Little Coyote.
Joe, Sr.’s Wake will be at his Homeplace along the Banks of the Tongue River on Sunday, May 20, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. with his funeral being in Lame Deer at the Allen Rowland Gymnasium at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 21, 2018. Eugene, Gina, Anita and families, I had the privilege of caring for your dad at HLC…alot of nights he would sit up and visit with me or come down early in the morning for that morning cup of coffee. Deepest Condolences to Joe’s family. I had nothing but respect for him, he’d often come into my office to say hi, calling “Anna” 🙂 I tried correcting him once telling him no it’s just Ann not Anna, he looked at me sternly and said well you’re Anna to me. So… that was that. R.I.P. Mr. Joe Little Coyote and happy union with your beloved Brenda. Prayers to the family for this Great loss of our Elder and Vet.

To the family,
We are sincerely sorry for your loss. It’s never easy to lose a loved one under any circumstance. Please be assured that Jehovah God is aware of your pain and he is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). The bible promises us that there will be a resurrection (John 5:28, 29) and that God will bring an end to death once and for all (Revelation 21:4). From that point on we will never have to feel the pangs of death again. We pray these words and scriptures are able to bring you some comfort.

I was stationed in London England with Little Coyote in the mid-60’s. He was daring and a darn good rugby player and extremely athletic and an amazing artist. He painted a huge Marine Corps Emblem for the center of the Detachment basketball court. He is one of those Marines that a person will never forget.

I was in the Marine Corps with Joe from 1962 tell 1965! He was a fine specimen of a man that loved the Cheyenne people and spoke of them with great pride! I lost contact with Joe when I left the Marine Corps In 1965. We had some great times together, and it doesn’t surprise me to read the testimonies written here of Joe’s great accomplishments! I am greatly saddened to read of his passing
Richard Castellano says
I saw the joe had passed in 2018 but knew him from the marine corps and he and I became good friends and went to Vietnam together. I’m so sorry for his loss. I happened to be talking about him to my cousin and her husband and looked him up online to find he passed away. If I had known I most likely would have come to the funeral. Again I’m sorry and I’m with him spiritually. Richard Castellano NY 914 656-6622
