June Marie Kuykendall Hannum passed away peacefully at her home near Kinsey, Montana, on October 26, 2014. June was born on June 13, 1929, in Clarkdale, Arizona. She was the third of four children of Alva and Sylvia (Combs) Kuykendall. Her family spent their early years in Skull Valley, Arizona having bought the family farm there. The Hannums and Kuykendalls were already acquainted, as both familes lived in the same area, with June’s uncle marrying Peary’s oldest sister. (June and Peary were little at this time) Both families eventually moved to California where she attended high school, and finally met the love of her life Peary Hannum, at a party at her Uncle Walt’s house. They were married on December 20, 1947, in Sacramento, California. In their early years together, after Peary returned from Merchant Marine service in World War II, Peary & June had a dairy farm in Marysville, CA, where they worked hard and raised their five children. Later, they sold the dairy farm and eventually moved to Montana to raise beef cattle and quarter horses. She has lived in Kinsey for the past 20 years.
She was devoted to her family and her greatest joy was being surrounded by them. She had a very strong bond with her grandchildren. She was very proud of all her grandchildren, as well as friends, family and adopted family, their accomplishments and loved having them around her. She took many extended family members into her home and heart over the years. June was a true pioneer woman, a lady of strength and independence who could and did do anything and everything that needed done. She was frequently seen driving a truck or tractor, farming, working stock, and, always, helping others. Anyone needing help or answers called June, and she always gave unselfishly of her time and talents. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with many dear friends in congregations throughout eastern Montana. She served as the Compassionate Service Leader in her ward for many years, being certain that those in need of food, help, and comfort were cared for. She was blessed with many caring friends and neighbors and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
June was preceded in death by her son, Cecil; her parents, Alva and Sylvia Kuykendall; her two brothers, Raymond and Kenneth Kuykendall, and her son-in-law Scott Foulger. She is survived by her husband, Peary Hannum; sister Lida Giacomini of Reseda, CA.; sister–in-law Shirley Kuykendall of Worden, MT.; her sons Peary Jr. (Lani) of Keno, OR, Dennis (Rita) of Dickenson, ND., daughters, Cheryl Scott (Dale) of Spring Creek, NV; Jacque Bell (Mike) of Colstrip, MT., and Karen Foulger of Kinsey, MT. June also has 20 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, “adopted grandchildren”, and dear friends. If desired, in lieu of flowers donations may be made to a family memorial fund set up at Stevenson and Sons Funeral Home.
Visitations will be held on Friday, October 31, 2014, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, November 1, from 12:45 to 1:45, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints: 825 South Moorehead Avenue in Miles City. To the family of June Hannum ~ I was so sorry to hear of June’s passing. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. June is a wonderful lady and I will miss her sweet smile.
Kristin Buck says
There is so little of my youth that June didn’t play a big role in, from learning to drive to all the times she helped haul our 4-H animals, to the “I’m out of flour will some one run to June’s and borrow some?” to college, and her time with my little girls, I wish they would have gotten to know her more but I know I am a better person for the role she played in my life! To her family I’m so sorry for your loss – I know what a loss it is!

We have so enjoyed seeing June driving down the road in her tractor with a round bale in front or watching her tending her garden. June is an inspiring example of a sturdy and hardworking woman who ,even in her eighties would slog thru knee high snow to feed her horses. She has even been seen sitting in the bucket of the tractor as it was going down the lane ! June will be so missed, but is sure to be remembered for a life well lived.

I am so sorry to hear of June’s passing. She has been a family friend for many generations and had just gotten the chance to meet my children just a few short weeks ago. My grandmother (Betty Pulse) and June were inseparable at times. When ever we ran into each other we always talked of canning and gardening. I will miss her dearly.
