Kirk L. Green, lifelong resident of Ashland passed away of natural causes on May 11, 2015 at the Heritage Living Center in Ashland at the age of 89.
Kirk was born March 02, 1926 to Clifton Charles and Grace Elizabeth Strand Green at their home in Ashland Montana.
He attended Ashland Public Grade School and then High School at Rosebud, Hardin and Lodge Grass Montana, graduating from Lodge Grass High School in 1943. Following high school he joined the navy and was stationed in Wisconsin. He saw active duty aboard the USS Panamint in the South Pacific as Radioman First Class during WWII and received an Honorable Discharge in 1946. He then attended Rocky Mountain College for 2 years studying business.
On May 29, 1951 Kirk married Dorothy Marie Susa, the local school teacher, and to this union 12 children were born.
Kirk worked with his father on the family ranch and helped with the Ashland Bar until his father’s death in 1956. He then took over the ranch and the bar for his mother Grace. Following his mother’s death in 1973 he sold his cattle and leased the ranch out. He worked as the Plant Superintendent for Guild Arts and Crafts at the St. Labre Indian Mission for a period of years and then served as Postmaster with the US Post Office, retiring after 26 years of service. Kirk and Dorothy purchased Joe’s Trading Post in 1973 and later named the business Green’s Grocery.
He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, tinkering in his huge yard building planters and a patio out of the native rock he gathered from the area. He enjoyed attending the National Finals Rodeo and the PBR events in Las Vegas as well as the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada. He had a knack for winning at the tables and slot machines in Vegas, Reno and Deadwood. He steer wrestled in the local shows as a young man and tried his hand at bareback and steer riding. Kirk loved flying, and owned several airplanes during his lifetime.
Kirk was a member of the St Labre Catholic Parish, the local VFW, and was active in most community affairs and events, serving also as a volunteer fireman for the Ashland Fire District.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 57 years, Dorothy, his third born child James, his three brothers Clifton Jr.(‘Pistol’), Michael, and Harold (‘Gabby’), and a sister Jeanette O’Connor.
He is survived by his sister, Sanna from Anchorage and eleven children: Kirk E., Donalda, Laurita, Francie, Susan (Vince) Dedonatis, Timothy (Karen), Rodney (Amy), Shawn (RaeLynn), Ronda Lahey, Kim (Scott) Studiner, and Cyd Green. I thank God for the 55 1/2 years He allowed me to spend with my Dad. Will never forget all the memories… Flying in the Blue Beast, Sunday church, dinner, and drive to the dream house location, spring brandings, feeding cattle in the cold of winter, fall hunting trips, skydiving for his 70th bday, hiking Shaw Butte and toasting with a bottle of chanpagne at the summit for his 75th bday, parasailing in Florida, hot air balloon rides, helicopter tour of Sedona, PBR events, NFR, blessings in abundance at casinos, DQ hawaiian blizzards, Chiladas, Bailey’s, handlebar mustache and his black cowboy hat, nicknames for all his Grandchildren… The list goes on and on. Thanks for the memories. Onto a bigger and better eternal life. I love you Dad.
